What was your first (Pine Barrens) car?

Good story. I knew a guy who's first was a decrepit yellow ambulance. He used to sleep in it. My first car was a '69 Toyota Corona. I only took it in the woods infrequently. My second was a new '75 Jeep CJ5 and of course that jeep went everywhere, even down your way in Bass River State Forest...

I'm pretty sure you have wild rice there pardner.......Zizania aquatica. When they say "robes all the way to the ground" they probably are referring to the fact that the sheaths of grasses are usually open below the leaf. Not so with sedges, they have closed sheaths (generally).

    what kind of frog?

Yes, that does look like a grass. There is a mnemonic that goes.... Sedges have edges Rushes are round Grasses have nodes from the top to the ground" Or Sedges have edges, Rushes are round, Grasses are hollow, What have YOU found? Or Sedges have edges rushes are round...

I don't think they are growing late....just that they never did get a flower up. That leaf may have been that way a month.

You are too late this year. If they aren't up now, they won't be. See the right leaf on this white orchid in our project area. By the way, in my experience they do not grow well in shaded cedar swamp unless they are in a very damp area with sphagnum moss. The other spot they grow very well in is...

Tom, what kind of habitat was that? It looks like an Orchid. Orchids are monocotyledons, which is one of the two major groups of flowering plants. They have only one seed leaf (like that shown) and have leaves that are parallel-veined, rather than net-veined and two seed leafs like a dicotyledon...

NJ is #2 for solar power

I am a huge fan of solar power research. How can it miss? Its a no brainer. Look at this photo of retirement homes in Toms River. Lets put some of those roofs to work with that stimulus money, even if it means a little strengthening. No pain, no gain.

    Lower Forge / Unbridge revisited

There is no one in that photo that I recognize Guy. Nice report Ed. I was never on that causeway road, but I did camp at Lower Forge one time. I remember vividly an owl hooting across the cedar swamp at about 3am or so. It was loud and clear as a bell (Bill, there's another good sound for you).

    24 Hours

Whippoorbill, I’ve been thinking about your recording skills combined with the fact you are committed to getting the good sounds you are after, where ever they may be. Suppose you created a CD…”24 hours in the Pine Barrens—sounds of a Pine Barren day” (or something like that). You could...

    southern wharton; 'freda shines again

Funny Al! But you lied about one thing. You were not lost. I know you, and I know you could have gotten out just as easy as getting in without a stinking GPS. Don't be giving Bill anxiety attacks unecessarily. PS: photos at 11?

    A few photos

Great color Bob. That tree frog is great to see in that position. I see so many of the same old-same old. That one looking back at you is refreshing. In regards to that Aster, that is the same one Guy and I encountered Saturday. I had some difficulty keying it out, but it is Slender Aster...
