That looks like Aster patens Tom, though I have never met its aquaintence. Were there others around? Do you have a shot of how the leaves attach to the stem?

Thanks Tom. We both agree its H. gronovii then. One can never be sure without a full keying, but I'm 95% certain now.

    roseate spoonbill

I like how wild and open that preserve looks in that shot. NJ is a lot more than exits on the turnpike.

It should have yes, but lets not rule Venosum out completely just yet. You don't exactly have a close up view there. But, its does look like gronovii from where I'm sitting. But if you asked me to put $100 on it, I'd want to see it up close.

Tom, very good...you have the right genus. I'm not sure that it's not Hieracium gronovii, which is more likely than H. venosum to be blooming right now. Do you have a photo of the leaves?

    Pair of Timber Rattlers

I see at least one timber rattler every year. I am not afraid to pin one with a stick and handle him, but I just can't do it...I think it is because I respect how rare and unique they are, and I'd hate to sully that with human handling (not to mention they have never acted aggressive towards me...

    Riding to Atsion in 1773

It was awful back then. I've been reading this Samuel Sewall diary. The people were dropping dead like flies all around him, or had numerous ills and fevers all the time...

I can't see them in the post, but I looked in your gallery Turtle. You mean the Rattlesnake Master, right? Yes, it is common on the lower Mullica only. I have seen it on the lower Wading too. But it is not seen at all in the heart of the pines that I know of.

Sorry I can't help you ID them. I'm not a fungi, I guess I need to go to more parties.

    Pines Findings

Chris, that was an Eastern Hognose snake. Some call them "Puff Adders". Look it up on google images. I found this young snapper in my yard this morning. I live 3 blocks from the lake. Go figure. Sorry for the lousy photo.

That is a member of the Genus Lycopodium trying to make its way in the world, but he is not finding it a great habitat. Do you see that green plant in the upper right corner? That is Lycopodium digitatum. I don't think its related to the plant you see, but it could be. They like to grow long...

    Purchase A & B Stone, and a Canal

I do remember that. Just 4 weeks ago I was way out on a tributary of the Chamberlin Branch. Way the hell out there in the middle of nowhere I found a cart with two large bicycle tires. It looked like it was pulled by dogs. I just stood there looking at it, dumbfounded. It was at least 400 yards...

That AC is odd. Remember that time we found the tricyle way the hell out in the pine plains?

A beautiful shot! I'm not sure if it is a grass or not. I'd say 50-50. I just can't tell.
