Your first post and you put it in bold letters, and red at that! How about "I would like to know how to get to Ace Campground, could anyone tell me?"

You did put "please" so that is a good start.

I have to tell you the state now owns the property, and they have a fence with a gate and it has a lock on it. So they apparently do not want anyone roaming around in there, and they may not want people posting on how to get there.

So everyone, is that a good answer or am I wrong?

I don't know Guy, seems kind of strange to not tell him when you tell us that you "slipped around the gate" on the next post. :)

You not telling him is a personal decision, and thats your choice and your right. In that case, no response by you would have been fine (let someone else stick out their neck).

But, if you did make the choice to help him out, I can see giving him directions to the fence and letting him make the adult decision on his own on whether or not to enter. But to not give anyone directions should not be a hard and fast rule of this website.

And now I'm going to seem like I want it both ways. I would make it a hard and fast rule to not reveal endangered plant and animal locations. That makes me a hypocrite, oh well........

You can't really slip around the gate since the fence goes into the woods on either direction. You could always climb it, but the barbed wire might ruin your day.

The best way in is via the river. Grab a kayak, follow the directions in Ed's post, and you'll find it.

I have talked to the resident Ethics student (Jessica), and she has advised me to "just post the damn directions." She says we are all capable of making our own wise decisions.

Those who decide to visit, realize that the site is pretty much PRISTINE. Don't take anything, don't deface the buildings, and try to leave it as you found it.

I will be very upset to see it show up in WeirdNJ and then hear that it's been burnt or torn down because of all the kids visiting.

ace camp

thank you to bruset and TeeGate for posting the directions.
I also agree with them that no one should do anything to ruin the camp.
We should feel lucky to be able to observe such a site in its natural form.

when i visit the camp in the summer, i will be sure to be respectful as i always am in visiting any site. not to offend anyone, but isnt this place just an abandoned campground? it isnt really a historical site or anything right?

It's somewhat near 206 in Hammonton.

I'm not sure the dirt road that it's off of has a name.
Your intentionally vague description is a good thing. No one should need more than that coupled with the map posted by Guy.

Would you rather visit an abandoned campground that is in nice shape, or one that has been vandalized and trashed?

The campground is actually more a trailer park than a campground. They rented small lots or spaces where you parked your trailer. Each section has an electrical hookup, and it appears a septic hookup also. They have a small beach, but the lake is really nice. That is probably the best thing about the place.

If you do go there, look for the owners name and the year engraved on the cement culvert not far from the main gate.

I also did some investigating back when we were visiting the place, and I contacted someone I figured could help me out. He responded to my questions with the below answer. It is slightly edited.

**************

The 'Ace Campsite' is no more. The property was sold to the State of
New Jersey, who hasn't did a thing with it.

This is all I know. ------- are 'hush hush' about
this subject.

Merle owned several propertys in and around Hammonton. He has since
become bed-ridden and is going senile.

The original name was 'Camp Swampy'. It was changed to 'Ace
Campground' so it would be the first listing in the yellow pages
under 'campsites'.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
************

Remember it is owned by the state. Steve can tell you what the state does to you when you go on property they don't want you on. Enter at your own risk! Also, there are homes in the vicinity. They may be watching out for the place. We did most of our exploring by kayaking down the Nescochague and walking in, which kept our visit a secret. If you drive in you will be noticed.

I,ll be kayaking to Ace again this summer, friends welcome.

It's a difficult paddle since it hasen't been cleared in years, but it wouldn't be an adventure if it was easy.
