Budd Wilson

Folks:

It is with profound sadness that I report the passing of archaeologist Budd Wilson this morning, surrounded by friends and family. As was his wish, no formal service or memorial will be held. So, we should remember him in our hearts and minds.

Requiescat In Pace, Budd. You presence will be sorely missed.

In grief,
Jerseyman

Very sad. The last time I saw him was a few years ago at the Lines on the Pines. I was at Ted Gordon's table, filling a few holes in my cranberry label collection, and Bud stopped by. The three of us chatted for a while. Those wonderful few minutes are even more precious to me now. I'd only spoken to Budd a few times before that. I only wish I had more opportunities.

Sorry to hear that. He was very helpful to me on a few occasions. We have lost quite a bit of knowledge in his passing.

Thank you Jerseyman for letting us know.

I recall sitting at a picnic table with Barry at Green Bank Methodist Church (off River Road) discussing the names in the adjacent cemetary. Must have been around 20 years ago. Budd (who I'd never met before) was walking on River Road in a determined way towards the forest as we sat there. Barry whispered "hey, that's Budd Wilson". I called over "Hey Budd, come on over"! He did, and sat and talked for a half hour, answering every question we had. That left a good impression on me to this day. One of those days that stay in your mind.

Budd was a really nice person. Out of the blue in 2007 he sent me a letter in the mail telling me about a society stone he discovered years before and wanted me to know where it was. Here is his letter to me. He sent me a crude hand drawn map as well and I was able to find the stone.

He sent this B&W photo along with it. Notice the word "beginning" is spelled incorrect.

Ah, Budd! What a tremendous human being. It was a privilege to get to know him over the years. Always generous with his time and knowledge. Always modest and inquisitive. Our last adventure together was 10 years ago when we explored the Nescochague Creek for remains of past operations. At one point, Budd put on a pair of goggles and dove to the bottom of the creek to examine an interesting artifact. He was loved by many and his Pinelands legacy will live on.

I remember you mentioning this during one of our hikes.

I spoke with him once and he told me that after items were stolen from Martha, the superintendent at the time had other items removed and buried by a single front end load operator so only the two of them knew the exact spot. However, Budd knew where they are but not the exact spot and he told me where that was. I am wondering if that information is actually known and in the future will they be dug up?

I'm sorry to hear this. I was fascinated by his photos and firsthand experience at Martha Furnace. I hope that that site can be re-excavated and be made visible to the public once again someday.

Thanks for posting about my Uncle Budd. He was my mom’s older brother. He told so many stories of his digs and the Pine Barrens throughout the years. He loved the back roads of South Jersey which he instilled on me. My family lost a great man.
