Harrisville

My friend Pat and I went out in the woods today trying to locate Harrisville, and I think I goofed somewhere. Acording to a friend, Martha Furnace is located right off the highway there, next to the sign for Bodine Field (right by the highway, not the sign on the dirt road), and then Harrisville is on the opposite side of the road, back in the woods a bit. I found what he says is Martha Furnace, no problem (which is good, since I called to get directions him from the picnic spot right there on the lake). When I went looking for Harrisville, however (which I did on foot as my car may be a mighty '89 Toyota, but it's not that mighty), I found nothing. It wasn't a waste, as my friend and I found a lovely canoe put in spot on what was probably the Wading River, and got a nice day hike in. :) Also hit up Bricksbrae, Green Bank, the Pleasant Mills/Batsto Cemetary, and that really fancy neighborhood over by the Sweetwater Casino where every house has it's own marina.

Can anybody help me out, please? Was I close? Was what I thought was Martha's Furnace actually Harrisville? Where is Jimmy Hoffa? Why are the members of the Phillies pitching staff dropping like flies? Is Elvis still with us? :D

You got it bass ackwards. The Harrisville ruins are on the right side of the road just past the pond and parking area where you made your call from. To get to Martha you exit Harrisville and cross the road onto a dirt road and follow straight it back until you see a chain link fence on the left. That is Martha. There is not really much to see there but it is a neat area.
If you continue past Martha it will take you toward the cranberry pumping station and Nash's Cabin. If you turn right just before Martha it will take you to the Calico area.

Harrisville is located next to the Bodine sign right down the trail on that side of the road. Across the street, down the road you found Martha Furnace. As for your answer, you were DEAD close. It happened to us last year when we went looking for it. We wound up down by Martha, then down by the Bogs where the Cranberry machine was, then we would up at a T in the road, and it was half private property, the other half Military. Elvis is dead, the Phillies are waiting for the year they get to the big one and win, 2007, and as for Hoffa, he's everywhere. Scattered.

Alright, got it straight now. I did visit Harrisville, I somehow missed Martha on my hike. I'll have to go back there again sometime when I've got a friend with four wheel drive...

Thanks Steve & gaglia

You don't need a 4x4 to get to Martha. I go there all the time in my car. Just keep your speed in the sandy area's and you will have no problems. Just don't drive much farther than the fence around the furnace. Once you go past there you will encounter a few spots that cars don't belong at, and some 4x4's.

And if you encounter another vehicle on the road, most likely it will be a 4x4, so make them maneuver around you, not you around them.

Cars can go in more places than I ever thought possible. Here is mine in the Great Swamp. The only thing that stopped me was that tree. I would have made it to my destination.

Gaglia ~ Sure, I'd be happy to go crusin' some time. A warning, the only prog rock I've ever heard is the Alan Parson's project ;)

I haven't found anything at Washington yet other than Joseph Warton's horse stable, although there are supposed to be more foundations right there is the woods...

Guy ~ You were driving your car back in the Great Swamp in the snow? My car will now have to go to Martha Furnace, as it's a matter of personal car honor. The most daring I've gotten in my little car so far is to get back to Friendship...

Take your camera, we want to see a photo at the fence :)

Be careful.

My Focus is really poor in the woods compared to my old Escort. I took that to Jenima Mount in the winter when the roads were really icy and wet. Jenima Mount does not seem like it should be hard to get to until you try it when it is wet. I had hunters driving by me in 4x4's giving me odd looks.

I am suprised I haven't managed to get my car stuck in the pines yet and I go everywhere with it. I was back in the Martha area today looking for Calico. I can't seem to find it. Or is there anything left?

The Cook 1890 map shows is to be on the left side of the road in the very dense woods, that is now partially blocked off by that gate. More specifically the thick woods on the left just past that gate is where the Calico area is.

In all the discussions over the years that I have read here, nobody that I know of has gone into that brush and really explored in that area. It is something that maybe should be done in the winter and not the summer.

Thats interesting. I was hiking in the wrong direction of where Calico is, I took one of the forks leading away from it. I will have to head out that way in the fall and see if I can find anything. I will have to bring my digital camera so I can post some pics. Thanks

I was in the Burlington County library a few weeks ago and I found a few books from Beck. I am gonna go back and do some research. I thought that Beck only published one book but I was wrong.
