Scott, the chevelle came with a 454 at one time? Or was that just the designation of the model---engine was a 427? Down right dangerous weapon at that size engine.
G/M made both those model engine sizes.
And yes, a big block Chevelle was offered and a much coveted car.

I pretty much always liked small blocks prefferring the RPM's over Torque that were attained easier at less $$$.
I had a '67 Shortbed, Fleetside Chevy truck that I just loved fitted out with
a 283, 4-speed stick, and a tall gear in the rear. Pheeenominal!
I have had many fun smallblocks in many cars and had no problem swapping them into other GM cars. I had an Olds that was an interesting convert.
