Roadblock by Janis Joplin/Big Brother and the Holding Company.

Cool... but that song wasn't part of the Cheap Thrills album shown in the preview. Monterey Pop is a must-see if you like Janis, another film by D A Pennebaker, who made several truly excellent music documentaries during the 60's.

Did you know that Janis Joplin and "Pig Pen" from the Grateful Dead were a thing for awhile? There are some great recordings of her coming up on stage and joining in during Dead concerts. Found these with a quick search, there are probably more.

Clearly not. But this Pig Pen was a man after your own heart - not interested in drugs but consumed large quantities of whiskey. Rather tragic, it killed him before he reached the age of 30. Putting all the the craziness aside, he was incredibly talented, played multiple instruments and his vocals/extended raps literally stole the show during his time with the Dead.

He would often do a solo of the Lightnin' Hopkins classic "Katie Mae", playing acoustic guitar in authentic country blues style.

Lightnin' Hopkins is also a big favorite of mine (I have a cat named Katie Mae :D ). If you have the chance, check out "The Blues Accordin' to Lightnin' Hopkins", a terrific short film by Les Blank.

Aside from the music and insight into his life, it's fascinating on a whole different level. These white college kids thought it would be cool to make a film and hang out with him for a few days but he was clearly goofing on them much of the time, holding them up for more money to continue (which they ended up wiring their parents for, IIRC). I've probably watched that film a hundred times and never tire of it!

If you have the opportunity to see Post Modern Jukebox on their 2025 tour, do it. It's a good fun show.
One of the featured singers in this song, Sara Niemietz, hosted live shows, just her and her guitar, every week during the pandemic from her house. Been a fan ever since.

How often do you get to see this song live? I always resented Morrison for not being more cultured (less rude) but he could really sing with emotion.

I myself am a huge Doors fan. Jim was very intelligent but alcoholism made him into that rude ornery person you mention when he was drinking. He was on trial in Miami when the judge allowed him to fly over to England for this performance. Lots on his mind exhibited by his lack of physical movements during this performance. My dad is a huge Doors fan as well. Last Friday when I got word he had a brain tumor (he’s doing fine had it removed 3 days ago) first thing I did was put the Doors on when I hopped in the car to go see my mom.

This song is very evocative in several of the lines. When I borrowed the CD in those old days at the Main Library in Toms River, I must have played it 50 times or more. In my mind I see two guys over 25, driving nowhere in an old chevy caprice or beat up old impala, while taking the drug that has a strong hold over them. But they don’t care, and they know no one else cares about them. That line is: “Now nobody knows where to find us cause it ain't nobody's loss

In other words, they are not even worth trying to find. This is Widespread Panic, and they are known for doing the same songs in different ways, depending on their mood I suppose. This one is a live version from the album Uber Cobra.

We're rolling the windows for this ride
And there's not much time to take things slow
We will turn our heads into the sunrise
As the storms rage in the west
And we're going down to see my lady luck

Now I'm not really interested in telling you my mind
Just let me drag another before you go, I'm a broken wire
Now nobody knows where to find us cause it ain't nobody's loss

And I can't decide if this place is make-believe
And worked all my life to turn sleet to snow
We will turn our heads into the sunset
As the storms rage in the east
And we're going down to see my lady luck

Now I'm not really interested in telling you my mind
Just let me drag another before you go, I'm a broken wire
Now nobody knows where to find us cause it ain't nobody's loss

Well, it's nobody's loss
Nobody's loss
Nobody's loss
Nobody's loss
