My first Orchid of the season

Oji, your inspiring me to look harder and learn more. Very nice capture! Am I right to say it is a Galearis spectabilis (Showy orchid)? (I have a cheat, I bought a field guide :))
 
I just came back from a day of botanizing. I had stopped originally looking for Pitcher plant, thinking I might find some here. There were none, but what a surprise I got! I found a nice population of Twayblades by accident because that little white flower above had drawn me in where I was searching for the Pitchers. I was shooting those so I could ID them later when I fell upon the Twayblades. I NEVER expected this. Anyway I had just about given up on the PPs when leaving I found some on the side of the road blooming. So it was a great day overall and my camera got a good work over till my batteries went dead.

Yesterday I visited the populations of white Viola pedata and while walking around nearby a single population of Senecio tomentosa caught my eye. Got pics of all of them.

If anyone know how I can reduce the size of my pics so I can put them on here I would be happy to share.
 
Gibby, yes it's Galearis spectabilis. Luckily I have several great field guides(the two legged variety) who take the time to teach me as we go. Having a visual helps me learn. Al some plants I know the Latin and have to think of the common name and some vice-versa. This weekend I also saw Uvularia puberula var nitida, U.sessilifolia and U. perfoliata blooming.
 
Uvularia puberula? Are you talking dirty to me? Pig latin?

I actually have picked up quite a bit of latin on reptiles just from reading books about them but don't use it around everyday folks because they go huh? and experts might laugh at my pronunciations.

I use the Latin interchangably. Around fellow students I use it, but with most customers I don't coz like you said, they go Huh? I dont like to make anyone feel bad that way, however at the talk I gave on Sunday I did touch on the Latin and what it means to native plant seekers so that they can ensure that they are gettting the right plant since many plants have several common names.
I love that U. sessilifolia. I have it growing in my yard, its so cute!

I didnt see Galearis spectabilis in any of my field guides. I am glad you know what it is. I had never seen it before. But it was growing right there with the Listeria. Perhaps they grow in community and finding one could be a red flag the other is near. Just perhaps...

Try Orchis spectabilis, Did you find near where you live? It's more of an Inner coastal plain plant.

Oji, I was in deep behind Whitesbogs, scouting out an area that will be full of bog flora shortly, when I came across several colonies of Pink Lady's Slippers with plant numbers in the forties for each of them. I have never seen dense populations like that before. Several plants where in quads. They were all over! Atsion's orchids where in bloom too, but the numbers weren't as high as last year. Some of the areas that they were growing in have been damaged.

That must have been a good show Gibby. I've never seen more than 15 or 20, and that was spread over a half acre. Ben and I saw quite a few up at Colliers Mills, but nothing like what you found.

It was cool to see! The most impressive group was along a canal bank that was no more than eight feet wide.

Were you out there today? I got there after 12:30 to see the presentatuion at the General Store.

Yes, I was there today. I spent most of the morning behind the Upper Reservoir. A fellow named Len, gave me a tip, and confirmed for me, that an area I was looking at, was a great spot for rare flowers. You might have seen my black Ranger parked by the General Store.
 
You ran into the right person for info. Len knows that area. Were you walking down to the packing house when the crowd started to show up at the store?
