One of New Jersey's largest utility companies says residents should expect power outages of a week or more once the effects of Hurricane Sandy hit the state.
A spokesman for Jersey Central Power and Light told a news conference Friday that people should take precautions now but prepare for the worst.
The state's office of emergency management echoed those warnings. Spokeswoman Mary Goepfert (GEP'-fert) says the storm likely will be worse than Hurricane Irene last year.
Gary Szatkowski, a meteorologist with the Philadelphia/Mount Holly office of the National Weather Service, says that even if the eventual path changes, New Jersey will still feel dire effects from what he calls a "very dangerous storm."

The narrative of dread has begun for the news channels. The big stations have begun to ratchet up the freak-out factor incrementally - it is all about what might happen. An update every moment with no new details and the Weather Channel just referred to the unseen details as "slow motion disaster" and a "scary movie unfolding".

Ugh. I don't know what to make of the storm because every analysis is different and because of all the unneeded information.

You may want to reconsider that.

Guy
sat in a white pine grove during a nasty blizzard once.had an 8 inch diameter dead pine fall over and land right at might feet.I thought it was nice of the storm to bring me firewood, blowing a little too hard by that point to get one started though. That was about the time I started heading home:)

FirstEnergy (JCP&L) have already started to tell people to "prepare for the worst" - 1+ week without power. Knowing JCP&L, that might just happen.

I got through Irene, in Princeton, with just losing my cable modem for 2 days. If I lose power here in TR for an extended period of time I might go crazy.

My eldest son got chased off the Outer Banks last year by Irene, this year it's Sandy kicking him out of Cape May. He is getting a bad reputation.

There seemed to be incredible hype around Irene, on a scale of 1 to 10 it was 9. Is this suppose to be worse? The hype doesn't seem as high as Irene, which wasn't that bad compared to the derecho I experienced.

I think the hype with Sandy is more than Irene, which is odd considering that Irene didn't seem to be so bad, at least in Central Jersey. I know the pines got hit pretty hard.

I'm hoping I get a few days off so I can go out to the FRM's and take some pics of the post storm erosion.

I don't know about this one. I usually don't worry but for some reason I have a very bad vibe about this storm. I changed the oil in the generator, filled up the gas container, sharpened the blades on both chainsaws, and borrowed the large pump from work. I still have a bit of nervous energy left in me. Strange. I'm not the only one am I?
A shot will take care of that:guinness:

Certainly not. At the minimum, this storm is going to be inconvenient and disrupt our lives to some extent. But I'm so glad that I no longer have cable or watch TV. Of course the media are going to have a feeding frenzy - they sell more ads when you're glued to the TV. I have the XM radio when I want the news and the internet as long as it is working.

For less hype, just look at the National Weather Service site, they are not trying to sell you anything or keep you tuned in. Doesn't sound as scary when you see it in this form

Latest report shows this thing really slowing down Monday into Tuesday. None of the forecasters have any real clue, all they are doing is reading computer models and putting out their best guess, and hype.

Prepare for the worst, be happy if it's not. Don't depend on anything being the way it is supposed to be.

Truck gassed up, check.
Generator set, check.
Sump pump set, check.
Extra gasoline, check.
Food, check.
Old No. 7, check.

Actually I'm headed out for some things right now and that is on my list. When we had the "derecho", my neighbor had already cleared the fallen trees from my driveway before I got out there. I wanted to give him something but knew he wouldn't accept money from me. As luck would have it, I had a new unopened bottle of Jack Daniels sitting around.

Old Number 7 is good currency during a disaster.

The 'cone of confusion' has shifted south again in the 11am update. Just a itsy bit more and locally we are out of the confusion, or are we in it even more.
