Funny how I can simply purchase a hunting app for my phone that will give me the block, lot, street address and owner's name anywhere in this State. For a few dollars more, I can get the same data for all 50 states.

Scott, is that OnX Hunt? I found a CES capped rebar in Dicktown & someone looked at his phone & said "oh, that's Aqua's properly corner". He stated he used that App. to share that info

Yep. I don't have it yet but both of my sons and one of my hunting buddies do and they love it.

Prior to the redaction mandated by the State, and if I had cell service, I would just go on the Geoweb while hunting and get the information I wanted to view on the spot. The real advantage of OnX is that it is pinpointing your actual position and showing parcel lines so that you can see when you might be crossing a boundary into private property.

My new site shows parcels with names for businesses and public property but I have redacted the names of private owners. It also shows info on many parcels that other sites don't have, because they are part of a group that is listed on another lot. It's really easy to use - just drag the map around and the data constantly updates in realtime, no need to click on anything.

I was originally planning to have it show your position on the map when used on your phone, but never got around to that. Frankly, there's been so little interest that I may just discontinue the whole thing, so check it out while you still can.

Around 6 months ago all the property data finally disappeared from my app of choice, GaiaGPS, but still, after all this time, it still shows in OnX. I just recently went back to Gaia and told them about the "Property Class" field in the NJ GIS data. If they at least would display that in their app, it would make me happier.

Before looking into it, I had assumed they left it to the data provider to know who was who and who needed to be protected, in which cause I could understand the NJ GIS office's decision just drop all the data. But seeing that the state keeps specific list and that it is incumbent on the individual to register themselves and maintain their data, it definitely seems like over kill to me.

I'm a little torn on this because on one hand, it was a little creepy to have that data out there, but on the other hand, it has come in handy for me in several cases. Did anyone wind up talking to the GIS office and did they say they were going to try to sort this out or were they sticking with the policy of just dumping everything for convenience sake?

I know I've told you this before, but I'll tell you again your site is awesome! I didn't even know about this particular view until I came back upon this thread after being annoyed about the name redaction. I was trying to plot a path in an area I wanted to explore and want to make sure I stayed on public property and using this view/layer was, hands down, the easiest way to do it.

If you didn't already notice, using my two "street maps" (which weren't available when this thread began) gives a clear visual indication of public land (green shading) without all the clutter of a topo or aerial.

Am currently working on much larger versions of these street maps that will cover all of New Jersey with large parts of adjacent states, including New York City and Long Island. Turns out that parcel data is now available for many locations in other states, plus all of NJ. Comprehensive US openspace data comes from the USGS Protected Areas Database (PAD) that we discussed in this thread.

Taking a long time for these however, so much to sift through and am trying to reconcile new data with my own legacy data, such as my 2018 map of New Jersey (which, turns out, is kind of a mess outside the pines, LOL). Should be available later this summer, and hope to expand coverage to the entire Northeast US to match the LIDAR maps by the end of the year.

But the PinesXT app (screenshots above) is only for Southern NJ, with no plans to expand that. The streetmaps are also available in the main boydsmaps app, of course.

I have no insight into any of this and haven't talked to anybody. But I can understand why they just blanked out all the names. How often do you think they should update the parcel maps? Because on any given day somebody could register for that list, they could move to a different home, get married and change their name or even die. Unless it's some kind of "live" data connection, the map is not likely to be in sync with their list of public officials.

BTW, recently I noticed that Garmin claims to have full parcel coverage of New Jersey on their "hunt view" maps, including owner names. For you Garmin die-hards, might be worth investigating. Not sure how compatible this is with older devices, you'd need to research all of that. $50/year isn't bad for access to full US data (if that's actually what this offers). But note that it's different from Birdseye (now discontinued) where you could continue using downloaded maps after your subscription expired. You need an active subscription for this.

There's also individual state Hunt View maps. I don't really understand the difference though, guessing this is a download that you purchase and keep forever, which is why it's more expensive?

Speaking of property ownership, I learned something very interesting yesterday. Do you know those signs on Fed property exactly like this one below? It does not mean you cannot walk on and enjoy the forest. It means you cannot enter in an unauthorized way and/or do unauthorized things while in there.
