All,

A few weeks ago Gabe and I spoke about getting a PBX paddle together before the summer was over.
We contacted the members of PBX to see who would be able to make a Friday paddle. We planned a Friday paddle to avoid the summer weekend crowd. It was a toss up between The Batsto or The Mullica. Gabe decided we should do the Mullica. We set the date for Friday August 17th, the vaction days were requested, and the logistics were setup. The members in attendence were Guy, Bob, Scott, Gabe, Tom, and I.

Bob and I met Guy at Atsion a little after 8:00 am so Guy could follow me to Pleasant Mills so I could drop my truck and trailer off to be used for the shuttle vehicle back to Atsion at the end of the day. We met the other members at Atsion around 9:00 am. We had a nice surprise when Scott jumped in on the trip at 5:00 am that morning. We all got our gear and boats together and hit the river.

The going was slow in the beginning due to low water level and a lot of logs in the water that we would get hung up on. When the river is at a higher level you can pass over the logs with no issues. As we got further down river conditions improved. The many beaver dams helped to keep the water level up. Once we reached the confluence of Sleepy Creek and the Mullica it got easy going. We got to see some beautiful country along the Mullica with its many changes along the way. At one moment you can be paddling through a cedar swamp, and then the next you are paddling through a savannah, and then you are paddling through some pine uplands with it's high sand banks, then you enter a maple swamp. I can't think of a better way to spend a summer day then paddling one of the small rivers in the pines. It was a long paddle and a long day on the river. We did in one day what most people do in two days. We were all exauhsted at the end of the day and glad to see the landing! It was a 9 hour paddle. Gabe, Bob, Tom and I finished the day off at Gabe's Nan's house on the Mullica with a few cold drinks, BBQ wild pig sandwiches, chips, Tom's hot peppers, and some cookies.

The mighty Mullica.

Beautiful country.

One of the many high sand banks along the way that made a nice spot to take a break, stretch, and go for a swim.

Good photos Chris. Thanks for putting it together, and thanks again for the pork sandwiches. I really love 'em!

By the way, that photo of your canoe is really good (4th from the bottom). Try cropping out the close bank with it's highlighting bright spot, and it will be a great photo.

Thank you, and your welcome. Not bad, I used my phone for pictures all day. I left my camera in my dry pack all day. I get rave reviews on the sandwiches from everyone that has eaten them.

That bright spot does burn your eyes when you look at the picture.

Great trip boys.
I wanted to make this one in the worst way and I was not disappointed.
I really wanted to see how the canoe handled solo and I was very happy with that too even though some of my F-bombs near the end could be heard from space!

First afterparty I ever missed and that won't happen again.

I just noticed this post.

Chris, kudos to you for all the driving you had to do as well as the exhausting day kayaking.

Good trip report with some nice photos. It sounds like you had a long day, but I would think that a 9 hour paddle is still better than a good the best day at work. Thanx for posting.

A buddy and I did that exact same trip not two weeks ago. It has been a few years since I had been down the Mullica and you are right - it is truly a beautiful river. I was surprised by all the beaver dams as I never remember there being so many. The low water afforded some terrific views of the bog iron deposits (mostly at the beginning and the end of the trip). We made it in just under six hours (by kayak) but probably paddled a little faster than we should have. I wish we had done it on a Friday so that we could have stopped at the (former?) Sweetwater Casino. The Pic-A-Lilli had to do (PBR on tap).

You thought correctly!:)

that paddle has taken me anywhere from 5 hrs and 50 minutes to seven hours.musta been some serious high bottom going on there

We could have made better time. We stopped a couple of times to explore a little, a couple of breaks to swim, a couple of breaks to stretch, we stopped for lunch.

The Pic-A-Lilli had to do

Not a bad had to do.

We paddled this trip back in June...it was my Father's Day gift to myself.;)

We battled lots of low water and dozens of hidden tree stumps between Atsion & the Mullica Wilderness Campground. I think my wife was longing for a dry, comfortable beach chair and a frosty cocktail after 5 hours on the river. We only portaged our boats once. The second day from the campground to Pleasant Mills was far easier and, well, more pleasant.

Planning a kayak trip down the wading river this weekend. I know there are ruins along the way. Anything cool I should lookout for?
