That first shot of the river from under Hawkins Bridge is the prettiest I’ve seen for a while. What a great perspective! Looking at these pictures from where I’m exiled in South Carolina’s heat and drought, it’s the brilliant greens that impress me first. Since thunderstorms were circling around—and the expressions on y’all’s faces suggest concern—it must have been a warm day, but you’d never guess it from this collection. In fact, the Wading, so darkly topaz, reminds me of free-flowing, deliciously cool root beer.

The scene above could come straight from a fairy tale, with its shadowy enchanted woods, banks of silvered sand, and the lone canoe, waiting for a mysterious passenger. Magic lurks here!

Thank you, Al, for your adventurous spirit. Thank you, Whip, for the magic.

Until today, I hadn't visited the pine barrens since Alfie and I paddled the Mullica (eons ago). Rough summer. This morning, I joined another photographer pre-dawn at one of the bogs in Friendship. We stood through quite a shower at dawn, but that soon passed, and a nice morning was spent in the area.

The highlight was hearing a single Pine Barrens Tree Frog wonk a dozen times or so, mid-morning. Needless to say, I wonked back.

A few photos from the morning:

Alfie gits his new camera and he's gonna be a photomatogapher too.zoom, macro, megapixels and aperture, see I'm learnin already:)

Or it could be, too dark, blurry, out of focus, and the ever popular, the batteries are dead. :D

Ever-beautiful, the Toop looks low, although you've made it magically serene.

The dawn-silvered bogs would be my favorite shots if it weren't for the tree silhouette flanked by perfectly muted fall shades, set against pale trunks and fog-dimmed forest. One of your best!

Love those 'shrooms: saucy and stalwart and simply elegant -- each with its own personality. I think the solemn white one is worthy of Alice. :)

Welcome back, Whip! I hope you'll have more time this fall to wander the Barrens, and to share your treasures with us.

Bob,

I was looking through the administrative area and noticed the software held one of your post in this thread for moderation. So post 248 from July just arrived

never has been a connection in the past but I'm sure we could combine the two.The winner would be a combo of whoever gets to the finish first with the best pics taken along the way.you might get there first but with crappy pics you could still lose. Then again if takes all day to get one good pic and you never reach the finish you would still lose. We'd have to set conditions and parameters of course.Bill would probably get the best pics but get lost enroute to the finish.I on the other hand would get there on time with a bunch of blurry stone pics.

Not much of a day for shooting photos, but there's never a non-interesting day spent in the pines with Alfie. I'd wanted to show Al a beautiful beaver dam on the main western tributary of the Tulpehocken. Naturally, we took the long way there, also avoiding trails at all cost.

No pictures of the island next to the tulpe?heather island.must not of turned out.
we should've pushed up that island further.I birds eyed it and it opens up even better at the upstream end.I must go back.can either take the same way we got there or use the beaver dam as a bridge to get there.
