I'm not real familar with the tuckahoe river. I've seen areas further eastward, evidently, that are very wide. Which area were you in where it is that narrow?

you are speaking of the tidewater section.if you head upstream freshwater starts at head of the river at the first crossing of route 49 going upstream.shortly you enter some old cranberry bogs that are a beautiful paddle up to the second crossing of 49 at hunters mill/first avenue.this is the second set of bogs we have been walking.the water is deep enough for a paddle and i did paddle a short section once but the grass in summer grows so thick it would be almost impossible to paddle up much of it in summer.i would try in winter or spring before the grass grows out if this is your intention.it makes an awesome walk as the bottom in most places is not too soft, mostly sand and gravel except in some mucky sections that can nusually be avoided.

reup the tuck

Alfie and I have a few consecutive Tuesdays lined up this summer before his shift work cycles (when we'll have to wait another 20-some weeks before going wild again). Considering today's near 100-degree temps, we decided to return to last week's dip-spot -- the Tuckahoe River. In order to reach the location where we exited the river last week, which would enable to proceed from where we'd left off, we had to bushwhack quite a distance in the unbearable heat. Soaked with sweat, once we caught site of the river, a mad dash ensued. Alfie belly flopped into the water, causing a huge tsunami and torrential flooding throughout the basin. The only time I've seen him run faster is during a pursuit by enraged wasps.

Many photos below, but this beautiful upstream journey deserves the attention. Alfie, lead the way...

on second thought i think all those big leaves are pickerelweed, even the ones without flowers/arum is more of a tidewater plant though it likes fresher water then brackish and the leaves are more arrow shaped.methinks i made a boo boo in claiming some of that was arum.

I do not know much about gods; but I think that the river
Is a strong brown god . . . untamed and intractable,
Patient to some degree
. . . T.S. Eliot

Each scene shows another face of this fascinating river, its banks teeming with life, its depths gleaming with mystery. The fuzzy caterpillar is endearing, the swamp azalea lovely, and the pickerelweed still a favorite. I like the way the pickerelweed leaves catch the light, or, Whip, perhaps it’s the way you've caught them catching the light. Even that wretched greenhead looks attractive in its lustrous setting.

Question: what is Al holding in the fifth picture down? What’s he fightin' mad about? He’s wearing his better-not-make-me-eat-another-cranberry face. :)

Thank you both!

Glo,

He's holding a waterproof bag. I'm also in the process of handing Alfie a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. If I don't feed him, he quits.

Thanks for your lovely compliments (and complements :) )!

What was scheduled to be the final TwA for several months was jeopardized by forecasted storms today.

We packed a couple dozen peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and went anyway.

Alfie had one more tuesday

I'm sorry I flattened your nose with my paddle. You should have stopped criticizing my bowmanship skills. I had a hard time seeing the stumps.

Let me extend you an olive branch, Alfie, and offer a painting rendition of the day.

Okay? Are we good for this coming Tuesday now?
