That's an interesting thought. I seem to recall out West some Interstates having dual purpose potential.

FDR and Dwight D. Eisenhower as presidents pushed the idea for the Interstate system, named the 'Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways' and military use was part of the idea. The Wiki has good info as does the link.

I must be in the minority as I don't have a problem with it. However, I do find it funny that with all of the complaints about drivers making go-arounds and being told not to drive off of the road, the very same entity that is/was trying to keep us in check is doing this. Again, unlike states such as Vermont which have many multiple public meetings for almost everything they do on state land, we heard about this here from a woman who happened to talk to someone along the road there. In this state they know best and we know after the fact.
An added benefit is you will be able to see any deer before it runs into the road. 
Nothing like saving the forest by removing the trees. Of course I"m sure a few bucks will made in the process.
I have seen areas where the thinning has been done correctly and there is a significant difference in numbers of fauna. Lee, Haines and the state has thinned land and the results have been positive. Over the summer, a large stretch of land was thinned along Magnolia just past the circle and no one even noticed. The activity is a positive on the choked barrens.
The more I see about this, the less I like it. Why does man always believe he can "improve" nature? Is this simply an extension of the progam to sell timber on state lands that we discussed several years ago?
