Ruins, Replaced Pipe, And Various Other Things

Stokes between Hampton and QB is a roller coaster ride, and in many places so narrow that both sides of your vehicle scrape the brush!

    Cabin Camping

Be forewarned, it's almost impossible to get a weekend unless you just happen to catch someone's cancellation. Most people reserve way before the camping season. You'll likely find a few openings during random Tuesdays to Thursdays only. Good luck.

    WJAS Star Watch at Batsto

If anyone is interested in this stuff... this group sets up their telescopes near the Batsto visitor center and allows the public to check out some views of planets, the moon, etc. Fun event for kids especially, I've taken my daughter a few times. Many of them even have stepstools set up to help...

    best small compressed air tank?

Any hvac or refrigeration contractor will have tons of old empty freon tanks laying around. They look similar to a propane grill tank but use 5/16" acme-type fittings and are meant for holding pressure. An adapter fitting from 5/16" acme to a hose barb for regular compressed air hose can be had...

    Headlights

I do this to my wife's car several times a year-- at first the result looks great but in a month or so the haze returns. The problem is, by removing the outer layer of the polycarbonate lens, you've taken away the UV protection.

    Jeepaholic's

I don't understand jeeps as an everyday vehicle. Typical Chrysler reliability (lack thereof, i mean) aside, they are just impractical and get similar fuel economy to a full-size pickup. I own a newer Tacoma and although it lacks power and won't win any awards for cool interior design or anything...

    Stump grinding

I've done this two ways, and neither is fun. The first tree, only maybe 16" in diameter, i drilled deep holes in with an auger bit and then gradually burned it away, day after day, with gasoline. That was a long and drawn-out process and the ground still sinks slightly in that location each year...

    Pieces Of Hampton Park History

The antique engines are my favorite display at the Gloucester County fair each year. And the least favorite of my wife and kid, I'm sure. I love the manual drip oilers and the huge flywheels. If you're interested they normally have them set up and running throughout the fair weekend. It's in...

    Snow

Only lasted maybe 10 minutes here in Woodbury. Came through about 6:30. It left the streets very slippery, I was driving home from the store. Still a little bit on the ground in the shady spots as of this morning.

    Snow

My PSEG bill compares each month's usage for gas an electric to the same month last year. I was consistently 10-20% higher this winter than last. It's hard to say if it's because of the weather or just differences in usage.

    Gas Pipeline Update

This will likely also mean the eventual end of the Beesley Point rail line-- while it used to deliver coal to the plant, now the only remaining major customer past Winslow Junction is a railcar storage operation in Tuckahoe (CMSL).

I very much want to buy one of these for camping: https://www.bestop.com/toyota/2016/tacoma/supertop-for-truck/ I so far have not because of the price (around $800) and also from what I've read, though they fold down easily, they are difficult to actually remove if you need to get a load of...

On this day, 13 years ago

Manual transmissions are pretty much gone, as the all-important fuel economy numbers have favored automatics for at least a decade now. I have a 2016 Tacoma, four cylinder, and pretty much barebones, with a back seat only big enough for a kid or a cramped, uncomfortable adult. The 2tr-fe engine...

Need feedback on which 10 yr old SUV to buy for roadtrip

I am a dealership mechanic and have been my whole career (and adult life) so I am the guy on the other side of that equation. We get paid on a piece-work basis, so finding and recommending additional repairs is simply part of how we make a living. I personally don't know anyone who sells...

Need feedback on which 10 yr old SUV to buy for roadtrip

The awd highlanders use an awkward axle-within-an-axle to mate the front drive wheels, transmission, and rear driveshaft. They have an internal seal that frequently fails, requiring the whole front end to come apart to replace it. It is often improperly diagnosed as a simple outer axle seal...

Need feedback on which 10 yr old SUV to buy for roadtrip

A highlander of that vintage would be a good choice. Avoid the AWD models, they have some significant reliability issues. A 4Runner is a much more capable vehicle but also much more expensive to fuel and maintain, and any that you find around here will be severely rusted. They just don't hold up...

    Census survey

I checked and it is indeed administered by the US Census Bureau, and federal law requires that targeted households respond.

    Snow

WTF is going on in this picture? I think if you have enough moisture inside the electrical box to make ice, you have other issues than just the cold!

    60 degrees

Poured a section of concrete curb along my driveway today so I hope it stays above freezing tonight! I mixed it (32 80lb bags) with hot water to accelerate the process a little bit. Technically fresh concrete doesn't get damaged until the air temperature reaches 25. It was cold outside when I...
