Atlantic City Rail Line shutting down for 5 months

Perhaps giving it some time, to make sure whatever residual ridership remains, will die off?

    Blue hole hikes

I love the ponds off of Schooner Landing/ Barth Rd. in Cumberland County, if you're willing to make the drive. It's the last exit off Route 55 South, just before it goes to two lanes. Used to be a great spot to go for a swim but the partiers ruined it and now it's frequently patrolled. Still a...

    2019 First Day Hikes

Ended up going to Parvin S.P. and the turnout was good. Got about a three hour kayak paddle in beforehand. Perfect temperature but high winds made the lake very choppy! It was like kayaking in the ocean.

Artesian well north of Lower Forge

Lower forge is one of my favorite places but it also feels among the most isolated. When camping there i have in the past parked my truck on the little loop about 2000 feet south of camp where the Batona Trail sign is, and i always wonder if I'll find it vandalized or broken into in the morning...

    Atsion Road 1913

The Ben Franklin was the first road bridge south of Trenton- it opened in 1926 and was for a short time the longest span in the world. The Delair bridge was built by the PRR in 1895/1896 and was the first rail crossing into South Jersey. Before the construction of those two there were several...

    2019 First Day Hikes

I guess someone beat you to it and cleared that tree. That big puddle in the first 1/4 mile has been there for as long as I can remember and turns a deep green in the summertime from algae.

    2019 First Day Hikes

I hate gear oil, especially when it's already been in a truck axle for a couple years. Nasty, stinky stuff!

    2019 First Day Hikes

Maybe you were through there before the big tree came down? Last time i visited, it was completely blocked, and that was late summer or early fall.

    2019 First Day Hikes

There's been a giant mud hole a few hundred feet from Hampton Rd that was passable if you had a big, tall vehicle. But sometime during last winter a tree fell down across the hole and completely blocked access. Last time I was there in the summer, there were tracks from some sort of bulldozer...

    2019 First Day Hikes

Information for this coming new years day's planned guided hikes has been posted on the state's website. https://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/first_day_hikes.html I'd like to do the Hampton to Atsion hike. I wonder if they will go down Riders Switch and then follow the tracks...

    Thick Hole

Old thread, but I just remembered this article, written by a former teacher of mine. It talks about the Vineland area in great detail, especially East Vineland/New Italy. It touches briefly on the pre- Charles Landis era-- trapping and woodcutting were the main types of economic activity before...

    Where is this?

Perhaps it uses a steel lintel over the upstairs windows? My house was built with steel lintels in the front, facing the street, and reinforced concrete ones in the back and sides. I assume at the time the concrete ones were cheaper, and the extra money was only spent in the highly visible areas.

This seems like a good idea.

Trust me, there are people out there who are just dying to shell out cash for any kind of bolt-on truck/four-wheeling/outdoors accessory they can get their hands on. Outdoor shower tanks that attach to the truck, rooftop tents, weird moose-pusher bumpers, you name it. I like camping but that...

    Identify This Road

Makes sense as the pond looks manmade. There's a similar one nearby on the other side of the ACE. Inskip Rd. is worth exploring sometime.

    Identify This Road

Not much back there but trash. That pond is definitely a big party and dumping spot. You can get that far with any car but further west is nearly impassable. The dirt road on the other side of Fleming (heading east) is more interesting and goes all the way out to Piney Hollow. It also goes by...

    Wharton Advisory

57.3" inches here in Gloucester County, year-to-date. That's 16" above average. Very wet year, near record precipitation. I noticed that recently even very light rain creates lots of runoff due to the soil saturation.

    New Jeep pu...

My Ranger was a 1995, when small trucks were small. The Tacoma is a 2016 and hardly fits through anything. I had to fold my mirrors in last week to make it through Goodwater Rd. from Batsto to QB and still ended up with some trail stripes on both front doors. The Jeep I had worked on that had...

    New Jeep pu...

Those luxury jeeps are getting rediculous. Most are 35 to 45k, plenty have glowing lights and every other stupid accessory one can dream of, and almost none ever get operated off the paved highway. It seems like it's just some kind of statement, to drive one of those things today. Also, they're...

    Searching on the West Side

It looks like it's about a quarter mile east from fleming pike/parkdale road. I know you can't access that road from the Lake Atsion parking, but is it reasonably passable north from sandy causeway at the rr crossing? Haven't ever tried. If all else fails I'll just park at Atsion and hike the...

    Searching on the West Side

Sandy Causeway is indeed very true to its name for about 1/2 mile, beginning at the old railroad grade (Raritan Ave) and heading south. I just gun it and try not to stop. 4wd not necessary but I wouldn't try to drive a little car through there.
