Apple Pie Hill Tower Open Saturday

They are opening it again on March 18th. Don't climb the tower with a hangover. from the NJDEP email: On March 18, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. the Apple Pie Hill Fire Tower on the Wharton State Forest will be open to climb and take in the fantastic views. On a clear day you can see...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

We're seeing a lot of "too much love" in national parks, as well. People talk about overflowing trash, and unburied human spoor all over the place because of limited bathrooms. I use Black Run every weekend and stay on the bike trails, but I think we have to accept some "sacrifice" of natural...

Sorry, I incorrectly call the named sandy roads “trails” and I have been corrected.

I bought a gun and intend to use it.

We need to make does legal targets all season for all hunters. Deer are a nuisance, and the coyotes can't keep them in check. That gun range incident makes me happy for stricter rules. I'm a member of South Jersey Shooting Club, and if someone blew up their rifle with homemade rounds and hurt...

Apple Pie Hill Tower Open Saturday

I went and climbed the tower that day, it was perfect weather. I saw those too, stiltzkin ... not sure what they are.

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I meant that someone who wades in bogs for fun has no business criticizing someone who wants to drive their vehicle over a dirt pile, is all. If neither are damaging the environment, I no problem with them. I was just out at Funtown today. We saw a lot of ATVs and dirt bikes in Brendan, but all...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I don't think reason enters into it. They have a visceral dislike for motorized vehicles. The fix our parks members were going after electric bikes on rail trails! I'm not against Enduro bikers at all. They are trying to call sand pits like Funtown "paleo dunes" now to generate outrage.

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I was talking to some birders and photographers at Friendship, who were angry about the DEP Teams meeting. According to them, the current DEP head "gave them free rein to turn Brendan Byrne into a dirt bike park." He said Enduro riders make "secret trails" in the middle of the forest using...

    Trail Work at Friendship 2/11

We had fun cutting more of the blue trail that runs through Friendship. They are moving it off of Friendship-Hawkins Bridge Road. It's really beautiful out there. The roads are really dry right now, I made it from Friendship to Washington Turnpike and the deepest washout was maybe 5 inches? I...

    Trail Work at Friendship 2/11

I am joining a DEP group to help blaze a new trail near Friendship, tomorrow morning at 9:30am. I'll take some photos and try to get some GPS coordinates of where we work. I wanted to get out there and help without giving my labor to groups that are actively trying to restrict my access to the...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

And yes, I am tired of hearing "Rampant Destruction" and then a photo from 2017 with one tire track as evidence. One fellow said "did you notice all the chimneys disappeared once ATVs came in?" Where's the evidence? I highly doubt dirt bikers were carting away bricks. I wish I could have seen...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

They didn't address anything except to show the results of the surveys and to say "whoops lol we aren't gonna charge $115 like at Island Beach" I am so glad that they made that mistake, because it enraged a lot of people and got them organized against a permit system. Even a DEP Employee said...

    Is Hermann all but gone?

Thank you! I went back and found the house ruins that Ben shared, but I didn't see the wharf or anything like that tunnel or bricks.

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I went on a nice trail ride with about 20 drivers from Atsion to Quaker Bridge, down Goodwater to Washington Turnpike, then back via Penn Swamp Road. No one went off the roads, and the park police were at Atsion when we left. I saw a few dirt bikes with license plates on the ride. No one broke...
