    Pileated Woodpecker

snakeman, the sharpies I have seen preying on bird feeders in my backyard are quite small. About the size of a blue jay, their tail is also shorter and more squared off around the edges. In flight their wingbeat seems to be quicker with shorter strokes. The cooper's I have seen are quite big...

    Pileated Woodpecker

Yeah the ones I have seen and heard were also in high canopy in a very secluded forest in central,pa. Same type of habitat as you mentioned, lots of ferns with cool streams flowing throughout. Not the type of habitat you see throughout the pines. Hopefully this summer I will get a picture with...

Another trip to Manumuskin River Preserve

The area is pretty good size you can walk along the river trail which seems to be at least 4-5 miles maybe more. Throughout the reserve there is a network of trails, which seem almost maze like. But there is def ample room to stretch the legs for a couple hours. On google earth if you go to...

    Pileated Woodpecker

Yeah I doubt there are too many in south jersey, I have seen them frequently in PA. When you first see one it is quite an experience. Their flight is so eratic it appears they are going to crash into the tree. Also if they are out there you will hear them, they are incredibly loud and it...

Another trip to Manumuskin River Preserve

The area that was last time I was down there was within close proximity to where I found the snake. Seems odd that they would close an area, seems like a dead give away as to were endangered species may be. I have yet to encounter a ranger or any human for that matter. As for the dirt bikes...

Another trip to Manumuskin River Preserve

Yeah for some reason I feel like Manumuskin has alot to offer. Something about the place intrigues me. The few amount of times I've been there I have found both the species I was looking for (). The place seems to have it all sandy wasteland, marshes, sphagnum bogs, vernal pools, piney...

Another trip to Manumuskin River Preserve

No, I posted those photos because I know there are people on this site who are into finding old structures and things of the past in the pines. I personally am more into the reptiles and mammals that are found within the pines, but I did find the buildings interesting enough to take a few pictures.

Another trip to Manumuskin River Preserve

Didn't see any human tracks nearby I have seen big tracks like this on several occasions. I think it is just a really big dog of some kind. Possibly a dog of someone who frequents the area often, since I seem to find these tracks regularly now.

Another trip to Manumuskin River Preserve

Went down to Manumuskin River Preserve last week to going hiking. Came across some interesting ruins of a milling? area I guess. Along the river trail there are maybe a dozen structures of an old town of some sort. Here are some pictures, for those of you into this stuff(not my thing), Also...

    spiny softshell

Found a possible soft shell habitat you may be interested in checking out. While down a manumuskin river preserve I found a new trail which wraps around menatico creek I believe. The area consists of mud flats and banks, the water is not stagnant but fairly fast moving, which softies like. It...

    bear tracks

It always seem like the people who look for things never find them. I've seen two bears in my lifetime, one while throwing trash in a dumpster and one while driving on 80 in pa. However I have spent hundreds of hours in bear country fishing and never saw one.

Ton's of hawks in the suburbs

"The sharp-shinneds, and Cooper's are easily differentiated by the rounded tail of the latter vs. the squared-off tail of the former, but if you can't get a good view of the tail and don't have a good reference for size, be aware that a female sharp-shinned and a male Cooper's can be about the...
