    Knockin' Around

There is an unusual pine grove on Jakes Landing Road in Dennisville, just before you break out into the open salt marsh. The CCC operated from 1933-1942. I think a lot of these groves were still being established in the 50's and 60's.

    Knockin' Around

That is what I meant. I am not certain of the whole scheme of things with the plantations and whether or not the program extended into the years after the CCC.

    Knockin' Around

Thanks for the title of "woodsman beyond measure" George. My work here on earth is done now. :) Actually, this website is well populated with many outstanding woods men and women. I would agree that there is a general ignorance of the woods by many of our local constituents. I know I have...

    That's a m'boy!

My wife says my youngest son is a genetic mirror of me including the way he talks, walks, chews tobacco (sorry) and consistently finds ways to make a spectacle of himself. This week he was at Camelback with some buddies. Someone my wife works with gave him a real mummers outfit before he...

    Camera or GPS

I am very pleased with the battery life that I see with this unit, especially given the color screen. I do carry a set of spare AA batteries when on a long outing. I don't know if its my imagination or not but I believe the compass benefits from a calibration on each outing for the best...

    Heislerville/thompson's beach road

I would schedule my visit to the parking lot at or near high tide. If the road out is passable, you will have no problem. If it only becomes passable during the ebb, then you know you have a good 6 hour window to explore following the ebb and the beginning of the flood. Full or new moons...

    Cabela's Boar Hide Field Pants

Ben Filson has always been high end but their stuff literally lasts for generations. They started making clothes for the Alaskan Gold Rush. My hunting coats and vests will easily make it down to my grandchildren's children. Unfortunately, as you see from their catalog, they have started to...

    Cabela's Boar Hide Field Pants

These are the cure. http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2092283&cp=2069836.2069840.2075076&parentPage=family Pricey and heavy but bulletproof. I have their vest and coat and they will stop any briar. They hem to any length and put leather edge binding on for another $10.00...

    Camera or GPS

I love the 60CSX and we just bought another one for one of my sons. I have the 60CSX and I haven't really experienced a significant wandering problem with the pointer. If you are making decent headway it works fine. If you are walking a road, it does not hop at all. If you are struggling...

    Stephen Creek and Maple Lake

Beautiful photos Boyd. Thanks for sharing. I fished Maple Lake a few times about 10 years ago but I never explored the surrounding WMA. It's nice having a gem like that in your own backyard. Scott

    A Merry Wescoat Christmas

Not a soul. When I turned onto 206 from Chew it was empty. I thought I was following fresh truck tracks into the woods but I came across thin skim ice on a few of the mudholes a little way in. I am going back there again today to explore the western section to assess the ponds that used to be...

    A Merry Wescoat Christmas

While most normal people were sleeping this morning and awaiting a visit from Big Red, my younger son and I hunted Wescoat Bogs. It was crisp morning with no wind and a brilliant moon. We set out across the bogs and headed for an old favorite spot of mine. To my surprise, the spot was no...

    Happy Holidays

Merry Christmas everyone. Tomorrow I will post some daybreak pics from Wescoat bogs. My son wants to duck hunt and since everyone is a little too old for Santa, we will be out there waiting for some whistling wings. :) Scott

    Going off-trail

Off trail hiking creates the lowest possible environmental impact becuse of its random nature and the impossibility of duplicating and using the same trail more than once. Repeated, heavy use of designated trails causes soil compaction and root exposure and other human contact problems. Trying...

    Purchase A & B Stone, and a Canal

I had a great time yesterday. All of us learned quite a bit about a remote area of the pines that has a very significant history with regard to modern riparian laws. It was impressive to me to walk through a piece of woods, across a savannah, through a cedar swamp and then arrive at a branch...

    Blow-out Tide on the Mullica

Awesome photos Gabe. A lot of history laying in that mud. These photos also give you another perspective to consider before diving off a boat for a little summer swim in the Mullica. You never know what's down there. I have photos in work of some good blowouts on the Big Timber at its...

Not the blue hole, but something like it

I had a really scary experience near Mount Misery last year. Bob, Jeff and I polished off nearly a gallon of my homemade crazy juice while parked on a bluff overlooking an old pit. Bob met some old school chums and we had a grand old time on a crisp winter afternoon/night. The scary part you...

    Hunting Season

Unless you walk on all fours and sport a set of antlers, you have a better chance of getting shot driving to the pines. Here is a link to all of the various seasons: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/njregs.htm#hunting Here are the deer seasons...

    Forked River Mountains

Me and my delinquent buddies drank nothing but PBR from puberty into our early twenties in the 70's. Good beer and most important at that time, cheap. I liked Schaeffer too and my grandmother always had a case of returnables in the ice box. I can still smell that pleasant, pungent odor of...
