    Hiking partner

Piney boy Thanks Piney Boy, I never pursued my first love (herpetology) in college because a professor warned me about being unemployed. I now consider myself a 30 year amature professional. The forestry service was another pursuit gone awry along with being a Park Ranger. I know there is...

Another trip to Manumuskin River Preserve

manumuskin Perhaps we could set up a hike in the spring. I have not looked in Cumberland much and would like to give it a try. I have found pines in Atlantic, Burlington,Ocean and Camden County but would never post the locations. I would be interested in a group hike to my favorite places...

    salamanders

Salamaders Here is a Redbacked Salamander from Bucks County Pa, taken 1/31/06. And here is the same species, lead phase. Common outside of the pines, I call these "the usual suspects" for this time of year cause usually they are the first herp you see each year. In the pines I have...

    This weather...

Weather So... as warm as it was, I planned a trip to look for amphibians on MLK day and of course....3 inches of snow and 23 degrees. Well, my son and I went for a ride anyway and went geocaching on the frozen tundra. This after near record highs... no wonder I can't get rid of my cold...

Have you seen or heard something you cant explain?

bigfoot Need three concrete things. Evidence, evidence and more evidence. Like, say a corpse. It is facinating to contemplate though.

    spiny softshell

Softshells As far as I know, only having read literature, that the population in the Maurice River system is thriving. Softshells are also established in the Neshaminy creek, a tributary of the Delaware, here in Bucks county Pa. Both populations are, of course, introductions. k

    The Timber aka "Pine" Rattlesnake

Timbers That was a great story, very descriptive LOL! I am aslo a herpetologist (amateur) hiking and exploring south Jersey for 25 years. Seen a lot of development where I know endangered species live... or used to live. And it's more than a shame. Thanks BRUSET for posting the etiquette...

    The Timber aka "Pine" Rattlesnake

Timbers The one I found in Jersey was found at Warren Grove, actually in a hole and cornered, but she never rattled or struck. She must've been having a good day. Since then, I never go anywhere without a camera! k

    The Timber aka "Pine" Rattlesnake

Rattler Did you actually see it? There are Timbers in that area, you should feel fortunate to have seen a live one in the pines as not many people have (took me 16 years to see my first one). As a reference though, many other snakes "rattle" their tails and if in dried vegetation, will sound...

    2006 Birding

Salamanders Looks like the weather is going to be unseasonably warm for the near future with a "warm rain" on Wednesday. I will be heading out to look for Tiger Salamanders on Monday the 16th so wish me luck. I have never checked the spot where I believe the breeding ponds are this early in...
