    Pics from today

In the past, I would find a dozen or so worm snakes, ringnecks, red bellies. I'm guessing the low water table is keeping them underground. Spadefoots I rarely see except for this time of year and was suprised to see him out in the open but next to his rock. The red salamander (see pics) was...

    Pics from today

That well has been there since the property was first built I'm guessin around 50 years ago or more. It has consistently had water in it at the same level year in and year out. I have seen traps for lizards or snakes sunk in the ground like that, usually at the end of a drift fence. k

    herpetologists

Just remember, Field collecting in New Jersey is illegal. You'd be better off with captive born pine snake anyway as their are several different morphs available. The pine barrens are awesome because the herpetofauna is unique this far north, following the coastal plain up from the south...

    First PBTF's of the season . .

I have never targeted them and thus have only found one so far by accident. I am usually not there at night or in the evernings. Very cool.

    racer

Can't recall the belly differences on the ones I have found. Either I don't get the chance to take a look cause of their speed or I'm dodging their teeth! Most are aggressive, at least I have found, which is typical of the species. What's worse than their teeth is their musk so I usually have...

Unfortunately my college professor told me the same thing about the $$$ and being unemployed, but if you love what you do, go for it. Like most, I maintain the professional amatuer status by reading as many books as I can, field study and photography. Tribal knowlege from veteran field herpers...

Awesome pictures as usual! Was this the only one or was there a colony?

    Gopher Tortoise

Smallest one I have found was the size of a box turtle. That particular individual was crossing I-95 at the New Smyrna exit in Fla. Of course I had to get off the exit and clamour up the embankment to "rescue" the little guy. When I reached the top of the hill, here he was chomping on the...

    bald eagle vs. pickerel

:) Sounds like Alfred Hitchcock stuff guys watch out. They were probably carrying signs thanking us humans for the DDT years ago. I had an osprey drop 10 ft in front of me in Tomoka state park in Fla. once. Too fast for me to react with the camera though. Awesome pic.

    Snake Dens Disturbed

Information from a senior biologist with the NJ Fish and Wildlife only confirmed that the site is a study site. He did not give names or dates. He didn't seem too worried though. Still, digging snakes up in winter? I'd like to see the data produced from the study...

    Snake Dens Disturbed

Yea Steve, I believe I was there with you and "red pygmy" before it was chained off. I let him know what I found and he started the thread on the other site with his usual eloquence. They also tried to dig the dirt from behind the chain for some reason, possibly to drive under. Unfortunately...
