    Old Bridge Pine Barrens?

I checked out Jamesburg County Park yesterday, which is located a few miles SW of the Runyon watershed. I think the park straddled Spotswood, Helmetta and East Brunswick. You can view the route of my wandering here. Except for some posted signs announcing the County's hunting schedule, the...

Looking for PB Tree Frogs and other amphibians

The spiders usually spin webs on my back porch every August because the porch light attracts lots of yummy insects. My wife hates the big, scary spiders that live under my porch awning, but every night, I love watching the orb weavers build a new web. I figure that any critter who dines on...

Looking for PB Tree Frogs and other amphibians

Wood frogs are often the first ones to make an appearance because they are actually able to survive in the winter by FREEZING. They're amazing creatures. Here is a video I shot at the Great Swamp NWR 364 days ago in the evening after work. Of course, the air temp that day was in the 70s unlike...

    Found In My Back Yard

I would say that the first item is a railroad spike. The old Pennsylvania RR line between Bay Head and Seaside Park crossed the Barnegat Bay into Ocean Gate: http://octrainguy.com/PRRline.html

Is it ok to shoot dumpers?

Be careful, as timber rattlers enjoy hanging out in those debris piles.

    Lichen 03.02.2013

Lovely! I love British soldier lichen. It provides some hidden color in the pines during the drab winter. Here are a few of my lichen & fungus photos from the past month. Bass River S.F. http://www.flickr.com/photos/36452296@N00/8491053100/...

Looking for PB Tree Frogs and other amphibians

Thank you, glowordz. We own this useful CD. You should see the looks we get from guests when we put the iPhone on "random" and some carpenter frog vocalizations start playing through the stereo!

The Pine Barrens: The Past, the Politics & the Future Mar. 3, 2 p.m.

My son and I were there too. We appeared to have been sitting a few rows behind Spung-Man. I actually went out and purchased a copy of McPhee's book to get signed today. I first read the book when I was 12 when I borrowed it from my local public library. I just re-read it last year. Byrne...

    Music for the day

I really haven't taken a liking to The Replacements' music since the college radio-friendly Don't Tell A Soul was released in 1989, but it appears that Paul Westerberg has joined some of his old colleagues for another go at it...

    Motocross/ATV track in Millville

From what I hear, the state is seeking to build similar parks in Central and North Jersey but is having a hard time finding land away from NIMBYs. Once the parks are open in all three regions, I also believe that the state will be able to enforce all of the illegal riding going on in the pines.

Hiking to the Forked River Mountain...how?

Yeah, as technically adept as I consider myself to be, I have found GPS devices and their related software incredibly complex and confusing. I downloaded Basecamp last week but have been unable to import any of your maps yet. I'll keep trying.

Looking for PB Tree Frogs and other amphibians

My son has been bugging me for the past 2 years to take him into the pines to listen to pine barrens tree frogs and other frogs and toads. We wandered all along the Wading River last April (late in the month), but last spring was extremely dry and hot and we came home only spotting a few...

Hiking to the Forked River Mountain...how?

Lloyd, that is the abandoned CRRNJ grade just SE of the Atsion park office. In 2011 I hiked from Atsion to Carranza Monument and back and wrote a description here.

Hiking to the Forked River Mountain...how?

I've searched the Web & forum for info on hiking the Forked River Mountains and so far I've come up empty. All of the posts here on the forum have dealt with driving to certain spots in the area. NJCF and FRMC just offer general maps of the region. I'd just like to park my car somewhere and...
