    Frost Warning Tonight

I camped at Hawkins Bridge Friday night. There was ice on my water bucket Saturday morning....brrrr!

Pine Barrens, Drones, and the New Aesthetic

I thought the same thing. I've been in places I swore were the most pristine in NJ, only to find empty Poland Spring bottles or beer cans.

Brush fire burning on island in Mullica River

Park staff at Wharton limited campfires between 4 p.m. - 10 a.m. and we were reminded as such. It was quite windy on Saturday afternoon when the sea breeze kicked in.

    PowerPot

I'm always stressed out when my iPhone's battery craps out in the middle of the woods, especially if I am hiking or camping. Although it was a bit pricey, I splurged and purchased a PowerPot. The device is a small handled pot with a cord that sticks out of the side. When the PowerPot is...

    NJ Camping

I had a fantastic weekend camping. Nighttime temps were COLD, but the days were warm and sunny. My wife didn't do much other than sit around the campfire reading her book. My dog injured her leg before we left, so she just lay by my wife's side recouperating. We paid for the dog at Batsto...

    NJ Camping

I'm not a local and I booked a spot at Hawkins Bridge April 26-28. In years past, I used to call the park office and ask if it's worth reserving in advance or just stopping by when I arrive. On one hand, it's nice to see NJ Parks & Forestry join the 21st century and allow online booking, as...

    upcoming railroad repair?

I found an old discussion here. Read the railroad.net discussion to find out where most of the work has been done. IIRC, the majority of rehabilitation has been north of Rt. 72, closer to Toms River.

    Trout season opens Saturday

My son will hit the county park with a can of corn and our $15 fishing poles. It sure beats a day at the mall.

    upcoming railroad repair?

There is a looooong discussion of the possible reactivation of the old CNJ line on another forum.

    New Osprey Cam

Yes the osprey have started to return to the area this month. When I sit on the beach and wonder why the hell I can't catch a fish with my rod & reel, I watch the osprey fly overhead with fresh fish in their talons and wish I was an osprey that day

    Trails in wharton

Yes, it was, and the owner is actually a really great guy. It was worse when my son was an infant and we were trying to get him to sleep. I also live next to RR tracks, which are really cool most of the time until the work crews do maintenance on the tracks at 2 a.m. in the summer.

I live next door to a Harley-Davidson dealer. It's not pleasant during the warmer months.

Looking for 12' or shorter sit-in kayak

Thank you. Used kayaks retain their value better than Honda Accords lol. Dicks usually has a decent sale around Memorial Day, but I was hoping to get out on the water with my son sooner than that.

Looking for 12' or shorter sit-in kayak

My son outgrew our old tandem kayak and now it's time for him to learn how to paddle his own damn boat. I'm looking for an inexpensive 12' or shorter sit-in kayak for either me or him so we can go exploring this summer. Yes, I check Craigslist every week. It seems like CL is a sellers'...

    This is very cool

I'm looking at that PowerPot. I use these two battery packs when I am out in the woods with my iPhone: http://www.meritline.com/showproduct.aspx?ProductID=89536&SEName=blackbox-ocho-universal-power-bank...

    My, how things have changed

The map shows me how much of our now-forested land was cleared for farms. I would bet that most forests in NJ outside of the Pine Barrens are 125 years old or newer.
