    Candles already!?

It's been a mild winter. Not sure why that should be disturbing. If you've been following weather news you know that in much of the rest of the country they have had record colds. The snowpack out west is at levels not seen in quite some time. It's weather. It changes.

    "Where are the Pine Barrens?"

When I lived up in Rhode Island my brother and I quickly discovered Block Island, and started taking the ferry out every few weeks or so. Also discovered Newport, and Jamestown Island. Great places. Our new friends from up around the East Greenwich area had mostly never been to Block Island, and...

    Beer (again)

Not everybody likes the stuff. For me, I've always liked it. Used to steal sips from my Dad's ice-cold Buds during the summer when I was about 10 or so. I don't like stouts much, don't like wheat beer, or flavored beers. The ... (is it Miller?) "chelada style" ads make me shudder. In fact people...

    Estate Tours

Yes, I only brought about 35 "cool!"s with me, and I used them all in the first 45 minutes.

    Pine Barren Folklore

I have to admit, I've only recently come to understand the full goodness that is Google Books. I wish they had every book in PDF format, and a shopping cart system for the ones still under copyright. Wiki is a different sort of resource that I also find useful, and it is a lot faster for some...

    Apple Pie Hill

The white spot in the middle of this view... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Chatsworth,+NJ&ie=UTF8&ll=39.806822,-74.589872&spn=0.021891,0.042014&t=h&z=15&iwloc=addr West and a little south of Chatsworth, very easy to get to off of 532, or from the south. There's a...

    Pine Barren Folklore

I don't disagree, Jerseyman. There are sources, and then there are sources. Where I find wikipedia invaluable is in starting me off on a topic that likely no other online source would have covered in any detail. Say, Coppersmithing techniques, which I was researching a few nights ago. Whether...

    Group get together?

I used to take my little brother out to Atco for the races a long time ago. Nice to know the track is still operating.

    Pine Barren Folklore

I think the reality is that most information on Wikipedia is accurate, and it fills in many of the corners that encyclopedias don't cover due to cost limitations. That said, you really can't cite wikipedia as a definitive source for the reasons Jerseyman points out.

    A New Area

Speaking of trash, last Sunday we were in the woods longer than usual, and came out on Quaker Bridge Rd. just as the afternoon was deepening into dusk. We passed a convoy of two pickups and another vehicle heading in. The lead pickup had a bunch of crap in the bed, and the last one had an old...

    Relic Hunter

That makes two of us at least :). I would even buy a detector for it. I have actually shopped them before, but it seemed that you needed to be ready to drop a couple of hundred to get a decent one.

    Estate Tours

I just wanted to say thanks to Lynn for setting up the tour this morning. It was truly an experience in many different ways. I enjoyed meeting Jerseyman, Yeti (hope I sp'd that right), Largo, Whitingrider, and of course our genial host. The house was nothing short of a history buff's dream: a...

Give me a list of "Must See's"

I bet I know the one, if it is off a sand road near the fire tower footings, and faces NE looking out across the pines in the direction of Lakehurst.

    Relic Hunter

I've never seen relic hunting as being in conflict with the environment, unless you leave a lot of holes behind, I guess. I have nothing whatever against relic hunting, and I'm attracted to the idea myself. If there is something cool buried, and someone has permission to look for it, then by...

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

Wow, great photos, Jerseyman, and a great kick-off to what should be an interesting thread. I will make sure to grab some pics every time I pass by the mansion.

Towns that exist in both LI and NJ Pines

Many of the early German settlers in NJ came over from Long Island. As families matured and had sons, only one of them could inherit the land, so the rest had to pick up and go somewhere.

    Young folks interested in hiking/camping/canoeing/etc?

There was usually more than one, but as long as the ducks didn't interrupt us there was no reason to pick one up.

    Better Than Google Earth?

The tools in Google Earth are great. The heterogenous nature of the imagery is a two-edged sword. You don't have any control over which image set they choose, but on the other hand you find higher res images than you generally do in Virtual Earth where the imagery is much more homogenous. I...
