Does the recreation here die down in the summer.

I agree that those days when I don't see anyone are good days in the woods, but I guess I don't mind running into an occasional person. They are usually like minded, just out to enjoy the woods. I have week days off regularly and hardly ever see anyone regardless of the season, anyway.

Just be glad you're in New Jersey!

Isn't a SSN required for your kids if you claim them on your tax return? I left it off one year by mistake and it held up my refund for months.

    James Ungehajer

I parked at Caranza. It was a weekday, so I was probably the only car there that day. I had been gone about 4 hours and was almost back to the Memorial when I heard a "pop". I think what I actually heard was my window breaking, and I interrupted the person or persons breaking into my car. A few...

I do a lot of hiking / canoeing by myself and have always felt reasonably safe. I have had my car vandalized, though, while I'm gone. I'm more cautious now where I park my car, but I still prefer to walk rather than drive. I do find that the older I get, the fewer chances I take (example: I...

I also noticed that Jim was not posting. Although I have never met Jim, (or any of you face to face to my knowledge, anyway), I look forward to reading all the posts and viewing the pictures. Jim's posts are among my favorites and I'm glad he is ok. Greg

    Are the bugs horrible overnight.

Thanks, Boyd for a post that is not leaving me feeling itchy at my desk:) All that talk about chiggers, ugh! My wife and I went to the highlands area last fall (October), it was hard to believe we were still in NJ.

    "Piggyback" mortgages?

2 mortgages My wife and I bought our first home with 2 mortgages. It was in the early 80's, so the interest rates were much higher than today. We had a 30 year standard and a 10 year 2nd. We were both working and made extra payments on the 2nd, higher interest, loan and paid it off in a litle...

I should have sprayed my bag with permethrin!

Fall bow season and chiggers My worst experiences with the little devils is always during fall bow season. I guess it's because I'm always off trail. I started walking to my stand in chest waders a few years ago to avoid being chewed up. It is awkward walking but well worth it, as the itch...

    Riverview Beach Park

I think your right, my A.G.E. disease is getting worse:). I looked through some old pictures, and yes, I found some shots from around 1972 (35 years ago, wow!) that I think were at Oswego. You and Tom were in a canoe, and Pat and I were bank fishing. Of course, Pat and I probably outfished you...

    Riverview Beach Park

Surprizingly, I've never fished Oswego. When I'm there it was to canoe the Oswego river or to swim. I've gone there a few times this year, but just to take a coffee break at a nice spot while I'm out exploring. Greg

    Riverview Beach Park

I've fished Chatsworth a few times this year, but I waded. I hope to put a canoe on it this fall. I also like to fish Batsto and Harrisville. Greg

    Riverview Beach Park

Nostalgiatis Talk about good memories, James U. posted a picture of Chatsworth Lake a few day's ago, and I got no work done after viewing it. I day dreamed about the many fine days I've spent on that lake. I think I need a canoe trip.

I'm in the Courier Post today!

We go to the one in Deptford. I'll try again next week sometime. They are really good about ordering stuff there, but I hope it's on the shelves.

    GPS advice

I started tracking my trail runs using gmap-pedometer, and some of my longer runs were at least a mile shorter than I thought. I used to go by time and estimate distance but I guess I'm slowing down more than I think! As far as carrying a GPS, the most lost I ever got was on a long trail run. I...

    GPS advice

Jeff, could you post on how you are making out with the GPS? Referring to your original post (where you called them the devil), I too have not purchased one. I deal with tech stuff all day at work and haven't been able to bring myself to carry electronics in the woods (yet). This thread provided...

What's a good hike that will take us through some ruins?

Welcome to the site. If you are looking for a campground you can drive to, check the link for Bodine Field. The Harrisville ruins are at the dirt road entrance, on both sides of route 679. It is also a fairly short drive to Martha Furnace...

    Atsion Mansion

I have the same concern for Atsion as well as the Batsto restoration projects. I hope they had some type of qualification criteria for the contractors as these renovations are major, as well as specialized. I know the Batsto project includes foundation repairs, pretty major stuff. Hopefully the...
