    Lakehurst Naval Air Station Tours?

E-mailed and got some information back. There is no group minimum or maximum, and no cost, they ask for a donation. They want a list ahead of time, national security rules and all. I'm happy to organize a group for Saturday, June 14. Just post on the thread if you might be interested, and...

Camping with kids - how young is too young?

Congrats! 1 1/2 months isn't terrible. What are they going to do, run away? At that age, they pretty much roll with it. Feed them, change their diapers, and keep them the right temperature, and they are for the most part happy.

    batona trail hike

The bad news: It's a little tricky from Bass River, that park (and that end of the trail) has confused the heck out of me in the past. I walked two hours the wrong way the first time I was down there. With an almost 50 pound pack. And 13 very unhappy Boy Scouts. The good news: Some persons...

Camping with kids - how young is too young?

Hello folks. For those with kids, how young were they the first time you took them camping? My first camped at just under 3 months old (Bodine Field). We have another one due on May, planning on taking him on the family camping vacation in August. I realize that I'm probably crazy...

105 years ago, something terrorized South Jersey

Also, shameless self promotion: https://myspace.com/drivethrupharmacy/music/song/the-imp-song-37652317-39744067 The song is about that week of Jersey Devil sightings. I apologize for the Little Caesars ad.

105 years ago, something terrorized South Jersey

That was a wild story, I tell it to my students every year at Halloween. I like how McCloy and Miller present it in their book, that at the turn of the century, people made statements that the Jersey Devil myth was dead and done, destroyed by the modern world and modern living, only to have it...

Is overnight trail camping legal in the Belleplain area?

How do you keep the drafts from underneath? I love sleeping outside, and I'll roll my pad out on the ground without any tent whenever there isn't a decent chance of rain, but I've always avoided hammocks because I figured you'd freeze your underside off.

Is overnight trail camping legal in the Belleplain area?

I can see why they've gotten away from dispersed camping and gone to more concentrated camping... better to trash one area that have folks spread out trashing the whole place. At least with folks mostly concentrated in the campgrounds, there is a chance that the park police will show up and do...

    john mcphees, the pine barrens

Wow, what a picture. I hadn't seen it before. Did Sue ever finish her book about growing up there? I remember she shared a chapter, I was definitely ready to read the whole thing.

    New Sweden

Alright, let's try this again... I need to remember to not type posts on a phone while simultaniously amusing a toddler... Anyway, my in-laws live down in Delaware. Because I teach New Sweden to my 5th graders (the textbook gives it a sentence and a half, but I stretch into a whole period), I...

    Perseid meteor shower 8/12-/13

Waaaay late to the parade, but I was at Acadia National Park for the show this year. Cranky baby made for a short viewing, but I saw some beauties.

    Biking the batona trail.

There is a really nice mountain bike trail loop out of Batsto that covers similar types of territory. I believe it's 15 miles long. Not quite the 53 miles you're looking for, but worth a ride.

    Tom's Pond Trail at Batsto

Walked the Tom's Pond Trail back in July, just getting to go through my pictures now (did about 90 miles on the AT and took the family to Maine/New Hampshire for 9 days since then). It starts on the far side of Batsto, at the end of the row of worker's houses. It's only a 1.1 mile total out...

    Saddler's Woods to be restored

With the break in the heat, I took the kid for a hike around Saddler's Woods this week. This is one of those times I wish I knew more about trees than I do. Overall, an hour well spent. http://southjerseytrails.wordpress.com/2013/07/28/saddlers-woods/
