    Mt Laurel State Park

SM ~ Didn't notice any big rocks that weren't concrete. I'll definitely keep a better lookout when I visit the next time to check out the other side of the hill. Guy ~ I posted a picture of the survey marker at the link, looks identical to me. I'll have to check the full size image to be...

    NY, New England Vacation Ideas?

I saw him a few times - at one of the holes on the putt-putt golf course, on the sidewalk by the lake in Burlington (got a picture of my buddy riding him), and on lots of t-shirts. None of them were moving through :)

    NY, New England Vacation Ideas?

My favorite place up in New England is Lake Champlain. I've camped a few times at D.A.R State Park. It's not wilderness (it's surrounded by cow farms), but you can kayak right on the lake, and the Green Mountains/Long Trail are 30 to 40 minutes away with nice hiking. Burlington is 45 minutes...

    John McPhee: Three Word Review

My friend gave me Encounters with the Archdruid for my birthday four or five years ago. It is a good read, deals with environmentalism. Since I enjoyed two of his books, I picked up a few more at one of those super discount bookstores last year for $3 or $4 each. Between the baby and work, I...

    Mt Laurel State Park

Went and explored Mt Laurel State Park on Saturday, mostly because I was driving past it anyway. I know that this is the Mount Laurel that the town is named after and that there is a huge radio tower at the top. Other than that, there seems to be no info. The signs posted on trees there say...

Old backpacker Article on the Barrens

Most of the trails they feature are more wishful thinking than ever being a possibility. I take it as a "nice to know it's there when I win powerball" type thing. I remember one issue had four or five amazing hikes in Hawaii. I just sighed as I read them.

Old backpacker Article on the Barrens

I've done the Batona end to end twice now, each time over four days. The campsites are definitely spaced terribly. Day 3 ended up being 20 miles from Lower Forge to Brendan Byrne with the new reroute. We could have stopped at Batona Camp at the end of Day 2, but then that would have made Day...

Favorite place in the Pine Barrens

My buddy works for the Forest Service out at New Lisbon. He was doing research, June was the wettest June on record and the wettest month on record since records were kept. And that was with a few days left in June, which (of course) it rained during. I've thought this one over hard and I...

Favorite place in the Pine Barrens

I had a friend ask an interesting question the other day, what is your favorite place in the Pine Barrens? I offer it up for discussion.

Missing family tubing in Burlington County found safe

Seriously, do you float up the wrong branch of the river? I was just on the Wading last weekend, the water isn't high enough to make it one big marsh. And how do you stay lost that long?

    Wading River Canoeing

Thanks Ed. I should have thought to check the archives. I've never gotten close enough to see if it's metal, but that would make sense as its still there.

    Wading River Canoeing

Did Hawkins Bridge to Bodine twice in the last three months (most recently last weekend). The current was really moving this last weekend with the rain, but not as bad as I thought it would be (especially because you pretty much wanted the canoe to tip so you could cool off). Mosquitos are...

    Rancocas State Park

Spent the first day of summer break exploring Rancocas State Park with the kid. Parked at the nature center and walked in from there. Wow, there are a lot of trails back there. I like the contrast of the meadows, the mature forest, and the swamps near the river all within a short walk of each...

    Lake Trail (Harrisville Pond)

Thanks Guy. Looking at the little rivers out there during normal times, its hard to believe that water could get enough oomph to damage a bridge. But look at them at flood stage and they are very powerful.

    Lake Trail (Harrisville Pond)

Went out and hiked the Lake Trail by Harrisville Pond last weekend. Much shorter than I expected (only 3/4 of a mile), but makes for a nice four mile loop with the Batona and Martha Road. Saw a turtle, but couldn't get a good shot. http://southjerseytrails.wordpress.com/2013/06/19/laketrail/...

    mullica river camping

Just did this run last month in a canoe. Only had to carry around once (some of the kids lifted right over the blockage, but my balance isn't that good). Lots and lots of tight squeezes under and around and over trees the first day, to a completely ridiculous degree (kept it interesting!)...

    Biking in the Pines

There is a mountain bike path right at Batsto, one of my kids blazed it for his Eagle Project a few years ago. Wouldn't do it with road tires though. My favorite bike trip in the pines is Lake Oswego to Pine Barrens Deli and back. It's 20 miles, you can get ice cream at the deli halfway...

    Water Filters?

I've had awful luck with filters, I've pretty much given up on them and just use iodine. If I come across some spare cash, I'm going to try for one of the new UV ones. One of my Scouts has one, and it worked beautifully on the Batona, the AT in North Jersey, and out in Wyoming.
