Skit Branch bridge closed - advisory from Wharton

I just saw this advisory posted on the Wharton State Forest web page and thought it might be of interest. (I think they got the name wrong: should be Skit Branch, not Skits Branch?) (Does anyone have a picture of the bridge? Is it something a sane person driving a "suspected large, heavy...

    A stockpile of fill dirt

I was there today. Yes, you are correct. The dirt fill piles are closer to Stage Road. The wood chip piles are still where they were, but that's further to the northeast, where Dump Rd turns north away from the GSP. Interestingly, I think the wood chip piles aren't actually on state forest...

    A stockpile of fill dirt

Sorry, hard to tell from that video. Here are pictures I took last time I was on that road/trail section. This was back in July, though. Perhaps they added more piles there? I'm due back on that section, but with rain tomorrow I might do something else.

    A stockpile of fill dirt

That's not fill dirt, though! It's wood chippings from the clear-cutting of the Lake Absegami dam. (Well, it was when I was there in July, and I assume it's still there because they didn't use it yet.) I think they were planning to spread it on some of the soggy spots on the Ballanger Creek...

    Pinelands Commission Resolution: MAP 2.0

What really impresses me is not the amount of roads open, but that they have an actual on-line interactive up-to-date listing of the roads, showing what is open and when. Each entry is linked to the map, which comes up with that road highlighted. Follow the links in the article to try it, or...

    Camp Site Reservations

It's a real mess. ReserveAmerica was supposed to continue until the new system came up (I think the new company is NIC USA). But something happened and apparently Active, the company behind ReserveAmerica, told the state they were shutting them down on October 13. But I'm getting this 3rd or...

    A stockpile of fill dirt

I'm pretty sure that was the State Park Service maintenance people at Bass River SF, not fire service. They did several roads around Bass River SF: "Dump Rd", Dan's Bridge Rd, and the latest was Coal Rd. Whatever is left over will be used somewhere else. When I was on Batona recently and came...

    Pinelands Commission Resolution: MAP 2.0

Found On Road Dead. (I drive one - a focus - and it's a great, reliable little car. 12 years, only found on road dead once - battery.) Back to the thread topic - can anyone summarize what this means? Is this a significant change to driving in the Pinelands? Or is it still just a proposal...

It's a watch, not a warning. Watch and see which way it turns and how far, I guess. But Tuesday looks bad. Details here:

"Pinelands Jetport and Other Pinelands Dreams" - Lecture 8/26

You're welcome. "Lectures at the Lake" is done for the year. I'm on their mailing list, though, and I'll try to remember to post here anything of interest that comes along. Perhaps they will do something like this next year. (I'm just curious - when I went to the Astrophotography event, the...

"Astrophotography 101" at Bass River SF, Sat 8/19 (tomorrow!)

This was lots of fun. Had a good group of people and Ben was great. My only complaint was a few people who used their flashlights way too much. I've never done this before, and these are straight-out-of-camera shots, so don't be too harsh.

Program gives a look at some plans of yore for the Pinelands

The historian named in the other thread, Timothy Hart, is presenting this topic in the final summer "Lecture at the Lake" at Bass River State Forest on Sat Aug 26. I'll post the full announcement over on the "Get Togethers, Events, ..." forum.

"Astrophotography 101" at Bass River SF, Sat 8/19 (tomorrow!)

(Sorry for the short notice. I should have posted this sooner. But maybe some people are still interested and can go. It sounds great and I'm going to try to make it. Ben Wurst is a Habitat Program Manager at Conserve Wildlife NJ, mostly known for his work with Ospreys, including building nest...

    Fire in Wharton?

Those are impressive and scary pictures. I know, it will grow back, and fire is a normal part of the Pinelands. But it's still ugly. It could be much worse. I heard something recently about "mega-fires" that burn so hot they sterilize the soil, and fuse dead vegetation into a layer, both of...

    I hate mylar balloons

I once found one on the ground near the Batona Trail trailhead. It was a big shark or fish balloon. Printed on the tail: For indoor use only. Do not release outdoors, or near electric power lines. (Like that's going to help...)

    Snake ID Please

Is that not a Northern Pine Snake? Beautiful creature. What's it doing in your garage? It should be outside, slithering around, digging nests, and hiding from people.

Ants in the pocket... [shudder] yikes. Always into a bag. Really nasty stuff gets double bagged.

    I hate mylar balloons

I just want to say how much I hate these things. (Bass River SF trail on Friday. I did get them down from the tree. But for some reason - maybe the heat was getting to me - before stabbing them with my knife and bagging the carcasses, I held on and let them float behind as I made my way...
