My first Orchid of the season

I would like to ask what field guides or reference material others are using on the forum? Of course, I have Boyd's books, but I also use Paul Brown's book Wild Orchids of the Northeastern United States. Brown's book isn't specifically for New Jersey, however most of the orchids can be found...

My first Orchid of the season

Oji, I was there from around six in the morning to noon. I had left before the crowd even showed up. I headed over to the opposite side of the bogs, to make rubbings of several partial white front bricks I had found, only to discover they had been removed. They were embossed with Sayre and...

    Pollen

Most, if not all off the banks of the reservoirs had this appearance. Boyd, I hope it is near peak. I don't get congested, but when it gets heavy like this, it does irritate my eyes to some degree. The combination of eye drops and sun glasses offer some relief.

    Pollen

As I was eating lunch today at Whitesbog, the winds were yellow. I don't think what dusted my sandwich and everything else can be called trail spice, there has to be another name.

My first Orchid of the season

Yes, I was there today. I spent most of the morning behind the Upper Reservoir. A fellow named Len, gave me a tip, and confirmed for me, that an area I was looking at, was a great spot for rare flowers. You might have seen my black Ranger parked by the General Store.

My first Orchid of the season

It was cool to see! The most impressive group was along a canal bank that was no more than eight feet wide.

My first Orchid of the season

Oji, I was in deep behind Whitesbogs, scouting out an area that will be full of bog flora shortly, when I came across several colonies of Pink Lady's Slippers with plant numbers in the forties for each of them. I have never seen dense populations like that before. Several plants where in quads...

    Pinelands Evolution

I prefer the devolution of the Pines. :) I can think of a place or two that gives the feeling of being in the wilderness. Sometimes it doesn't even feel like you are in New Jersey. It is a nice feeling to get away to a spot where you can not hear civilization or see any human activity. However...

    Hey! Look what I found

Woodjin, what you are looking for is probably behind what appears to be a dust shield or grease sling. I thought, at first, you didn't have to take the hub apart, but you with the one you found, you do. Here is an example of what you might find.

    Hey! Look what I found

I wouldn't be surprised if those wagon wheels are much older than anyone thinks, maybe as far back as the 1850's. The hubs are more than likely cast iron. The manufacturer, city, and sometimes year can be found cast into the hub. These can be found on the inside flange. If it is there, it is...

THE BARRENS: NEW ALBUM RELEASE ANNOUCEMENT

I enjoyed all of them! It is hard to pick a favorite because this is my taste in music, but if I had to, it would be Salt Creek. Well done, Woodjin!

My first Orchid of the season

Oji, your inspiring me to look harder and learn more. Very nice capture! Am I right to say it is a Galearis spectabilis (Showy orchid)? (I have a cheat, I bought a field guide :))

    Chiggers, Pine sap and Mutton

I did some further reading and pine sap has many medicinal actions. How it works is it acts as a counter irritant by increasing the flow of white blood cells to an infected area, heightening the bodies own immune response. It is also antiseptic and cleanses the tissues. It can be used as the...

    Pinks are up....

I just got in from removing the the first and last dam. I couldn't get to the middle section because the water was moving so fast I was concerned, like Teegate, about going for a ride through the pipe under the road. It would have been a short trip, but one that I preferred not to take. The...

    Pinks are up....

Teegate, I tried getting to the second dam Saturday morning but couldn't. I only managed the remove the first dam. I plan on returning early this week, after work, to remove what is there. I'm bringing waders, a pick ax and loppers on the next visit.

Dogg, you're alright in my book.;) I would just like to see a few rare plants bloom again further upstream.

Woodjin, I am curious myself if the salve works, but what a miserable way to find out!

    Pinks are up....

The beavers have repaired their dam again. The boardwalk area was under atleast ten inches of water this morning. We went and pulled most of the branches out of the first small blockage. It was flowing well when we left but I don't think it will do much with the amount of rain the area is...

    Chiggers, Pine sap and Mutton

One of my favorite customers recently gave me a copy of an old home recipe for a salve for chiggers. I have no idea where it is from or its age, but I do know it was a reader write-in section. She could not recall the details of its origin. It is a recipe for help with chiggers, a salve made...
