Bobpbx, is the sedge considered invasive? If not, then it is Carex nigra (smooth black sedge).

My first Orchid of the season

I have a question about a detail I noticed today while visiting a spot I first saw Southern Twayblade. Some orchids have a bicolor leaf, which are red on the bottom and green on the top. The flowers of the same plant are solid red. The other orchid has a solid green leaf and this plant has a...

    Pinks are up....

Very good news to hear that Swamp pink is up! Last weekend, I noticed that the white sand by the boardwalk was loaded with Round Lead Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia). It has been awhile since the they have been able to grow on the bog floor. To all who are keeping the dam clear, good job!

    Wharton State Forest on Fire

I was working in Chesterfield today and could see the smoke from the fire billowing into the sky. It was intense that it could be seen from that far away and carry over most of the horizon we had in view. Why would anyone start a fire?! I find it disturbing.

    What is it?

It is a compost bin or a planter box. It probably doesn't have a bottom, because that is the first piece to rot out.

Using the tripod and being patient, payed off this afternoon. A photograph to compliment Oji's.

My first Orchid of the season

Exactly! I was looking through the ground litter of needles, moss and branches, when I noticed something different. As soon as I saw the orchid, I knew what it was. The appearance stands out against the normal ground textures. Soon as I found the one, I noticed many more in the area. Quite...

My first Orchid of the season

Oji, I took a moment on my way home today from work to see if I could find an example of the orchid you photographed. I found a small group of them. I was astonished! Twayblades are tiny! What they lack in size they make up in beauty. A deep marron flower complimented by green blushing leaf...

My first Orchid of the season

I'm jealous and what a great find, Oji. Yesterday, I was searching all over for Swamp Pink, hoping the warm weather caused an early bloom. I came home dirty and cut up with nothing on my camera, but I enjoyed the hunt.

    Pgymy Pines Hike

Tricia, if you get lucky with your timing hiking either of the locations Pancoast and Teegate showed you with their map locations of Warren Grove, you might get an airshow courtesy of the range. Don't be alarmed but do try to enjoy the maneuvers of the aircraft. It is a sight to behold. Warren...

    pickerel fishing

Strom, a nice area for you to fish is Stafford Forge. The old bogs are loaded with pickerel. I always see them along the banks when I hike the area. Click on the link I provided. The red marker is where you can park. The road is hard packed sand so it is safe for a car to drive on. The first...

    Window Watching Notes

We have a resident Sharp-shinned hawk that has adapted to hunting in the tight city environment and we also get visits from an Osprey that takes perch in the crown of the huge Norway in our neighbor's yard. I believe the Osprey comes from the Hamilton marsh. It is a sight to see the...

The water levels are still low and things look very good for the up and coming season. Hopefully the bogs will produce their beauty this year - Orchids!

    Video Camera

My Kodak Zi8 has image stabilization. Less blur, ten hours of HD video, 4X zoom, a SD card slot and a built in HDMI cable are perfect for what I use it for. The only thing I didn't like was it recorded in mono. A Sony DS70P stereo mic solved that problem. However, it does only have five...

PL Hiking Trails with Extensive Closed Canopy?

I thought I was the only one that notice this. It is a sweet smell, not quite the sweetness of a cedar swamp or hot August pine needles. Soil pore space and its accumulated organic matter is another factor to its aroma. A layer of duff recently burned has a nice scent to it too.

    Attention NJ Forest Fire Service

Good news and bad news. The cut at Warren Grove does not go through the swamp! I don't know what I was thinking. It had to be three seventy hour work weeks and a jumbled picture file on my computer. I had two different areas confused with the bombing range. First the good news. The cut along...

    Attention NJ Forest Fire Service

Bob, you can do what you need with the photo. The areas I saw where close to the bombing range, just off of its boundary. The cut looked to carry on much farther than what can be seen in the photo, probably all the way to Sims Place Road.
