Obama plan for spotted owl targets rival bird

There is a glimmer of hope in the article. Eric Forsman has studied Spotted Owls for over forty years. The Obama administration should listen to what he has to say.

Controlled burn planned Sunday in Egg Harbor Township

It has been less than a week and already there is growth in the charred areas. You have to look close but there is grass that has started to push through. It is interesting to see the opened pine cones and split acorns. Fire is a necessity for regeneration, but I don't think controlled burns get...

Controlled burn planned Sunday in Egg Harbor Township

The Forest Service was doing controlled burns by the new National Guard building and Joint Base area along Route 539. Colliers Mills was burned last week. It was nice to walk through the burned area today and see the bird activity. Bluebirds were abundant.

    It's official

This sugarbush is along Pleasent Valley Road in Hopewell. The traditional pail and spile harvest. The modern tube harvest. The entire mountainside is a tangle of blue lines. A close up of a tap and the maple leaf badge it wears.

    Raptors

Thanks for sharing the extra information 46er! The pattern of flight at the thirty second mark in video two is exactly what I saw but only six or seven feet off of the ground. The wing shape is an exact match. ;)

A Kestrel is much smaller. The bird I saw was about the size of a crow and had a wingspan relative to its size, about three feet. I think you are right with the ID being a Peregrine. The grey coloring on the back carried over onto the face and ended in a "V" shape on the cheek. The shape of the...

Thanks, 46er. I had a 300mm lens on the camera but didn't get a good look because of the speed. Amazing to see! I will have to pack my spotting scope into my truck for moments like this. Jerseyman, I laughed out loud to your response.:)

    Raptors

Yesterday evening, several Redtails and a Cooper were taking advantage of the prescribed burn at Colliers Mills by picking up easy meals. The burned grass fields made targeting prey easy. The fire was still visible outside of the tree line from the main road in and they were already overhead...

    LBI 1962 Storm Photos

Thanks, Dog. Those photographs put into perspective how quickly storms can change the appearance of the barrier islands and how any structure out there isn't permanent, by any means. Quite eerie! - I have heard stories before about the storms, but this is the first time I have ever seen...

The Sarracenia Flava was Fleeced (Trumpet Pitcher Plant)

I'm going to look through Craigslist after dinner. I have a feeling they will be for sale. Can anyone think of any recent ads or nurseries that offer plants like this for sale? What a crummy thing to do.

    Now what?

I think it is a Elderberry Longhorn Beetle. They have many color variations and patterns.

A great cover here... Old Crow and Gillian Welch.

    Cold day

We were out in the Great Bay area earlier and it was unforgiving. It was worth freezing though. We saw a few interesting birds and the coffee in the thermos tasted so much better because of the terrible conditions. It was frigid but still a good day. ( I watched a Harrier doing a search flight...

    Now what?

Yeah, I am the same way. I'm always bringing something extra into the house. There are many "What is that?!" moments here too.

    Now what?

Bob, did they just show up all of a sudden? Is there a connection to a new flower in the kitchen or some firewood that was brought in? 46er that is a great link!

    Now what?

Bobpbx, look at some images of a Boxelder. It might be what you have there. Check through images of its life cycle. Also take a look at borers, it has that shape, almost Elderberry like.

Help with a face and a place

I am sure others can relate the posted image to other famous photographers of the era, but for me it has such a Lewis Hine's hint to it. His portfolio is filled with photographs similar to this, and many are glassworks from southern New Jersey. I am not saying this photograph is one of his, just...

Help with a face and a place

Thanks for the information and a nudge in the right direction, Jerseyman. Sometimes, the obvious isn't so obvious. After reading your post and looking further, I saw a building with the same architecture as this one in a photograph of the Whitall Tatum Company. The photograph showed a line of...

Help with a face and a place

Teegate, thanks for cleaning up the image. I at first thought that the workers were holding a sledge or hammer, but could they be holding a hatchet of some sort? This might be a sawmill.
