From Oyster Creek to Bombing Range Road

Al, chances are that is wild rice cut grass you encountered. It is more and more prevalent these days, even on the upper reaches of the Batsto. http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/grasses/plants/rice_cutgrass.htm

    Orchid ID?

Jason, I am fairly certain that is Epipactis helleborine. Not a Pinebarren native, but as my good friend Oji will say...becoming weedy 'round here.

No, I don't think non-indiginous plants will grow there. You will get Gaylusaccia and Ilex as pioneers, then eventually Quercus will crowd them out. They'll have to cut every few years.

Wait, I have a better clue. It is right at the forgotten place that always comes up in conversations once in awhile. Even Beck was always wondering what went on there.

    4 Rattlesnakes Along a Road

Pan, I don't know...maybe my memory is short....but I was not bothered as a kid. I lived a little over a half mile from the little country store at the lake. I went barefoot all summer...back and forth to the store and lake so often my skin was like leather. And yet, none of us never complained...
