Where Have All the Pine Barrens Gone? Long Time Passing!

Great story Mark. As all of your stories are. Really good stuff. When I moved into Bamber in '82 I overhauled my living room. The Double Trouble sawmill was still running with a diesel engine. They cut the beams for my living room project to order right in front of me. My God, the smell of fresh...

    Sunday Hunting Bill Voting 3-16-09

Fair enough. Still, I have no confidence....ZERO....that a Republican Govenor would have done one smidgen better.

    Sunday Hunting Bill Voting 3-16-09

I am way, way beyond blaming one party or the other anymore. They all are incompetent. Yes, yes....that means Republicans too.

    Sunday Hunting Bill Voting 3-16-09

That might reflect the fact that most people are out of touch with nature anymore. PS: How long do you think it will be until the hunting community sidles up to the same legislators and says..."why not shotgun on Sunday?". Next it will be...."why not rifle for deer hunting....hell, nobody...

Who to call when the woods are burning down...?

Gipsie, You did your best. I think the real point of your story is that authorities are lax and don't often understand or acknowledge citizen concerns like they should. Though most of us understand that there was no danger, you could not have known that.

    Sunday Hunting Bill Voting 3-16-09

I hope it fails. One day each week should be set aside for the citizens of NJ to enter those great Wildlife Management areas without concern. There are hikers, birders, botanists and explorers that like those areas too.

West Plains Oswego, A PBX Hike

Man, that one's really good. It shows the anthers just peeking out of the florets. You have a great little camera there for the price. The lighting was horrible but it compensated nicely.

West Plains Oswego, A PBX Hike

Thats a great shot Guy. That shows the anthers at the end of the filaments. Crowberry is a dioecious plant, meaning one plant will be male and one female. This is a male. Its very interesting where we found it, and I wonder if any females are in the area, otherwise the pollen goes to waste.

West Plains Oswego, A PBX Hike

By the way, I was still getting a green screen on quicktime when trying to view that movie. In case others have the same problem, it's related to Windowns XP service pack 2 install. This fixed it, but restart quicktime after you change the setting...

Bah! You take many I wished I had! Your broom crowberry shots are really good, and that one of the shaft with me at the end is visually cool.

West Plains Oswego, A PBX Hike

The first 3 miles of this exploring trek were the most intense we have ever had. And that is saying something since we've had over 30 PBX hikes in all kinds of places, including the Great Swamp many times. But, as all of them are, it was interesting to see how the topography changes. Here is...

    Thursday Along The Plains Branch

Great stuff Guy! How did Rob like it? I'll bet he likes getting away from society, like I do. Regarding the location of the old cabin, I like that mess you found better than the cabin. I did not think much at all of that cabin. It seemed a shack to me. Did you make it to those savannas...

    Stafford Forge Target Range Clean-up

That is real good news German. If you ever get a free hand to change what you want, lets tear down that plastic walkway and put up a cedar one. It breaks my heart to see the tiny flakes of plastic drop into the bog. PS: the hand rails are too high too. Makes viewing hard.
