    Exploring Makepeace WMA

Happy New Year all...on Chirstmas Eve my husband and I were doing some trail hiking in an out of the way area and came across some tracks... One is of a "scratching". The pine needles were removed to a pile just behind the long scrape. There were no foot prints to be seen due to the trail...

    First Snow

reading this thread made me chuckle.....I had a vision of a couple of old guys sitting on a bench or around a wood burning stove discussing the weather. i guess this forum is the "new" country store. I would love a white Christmas and that would be enough.

Southern pine beetles killing trees in NJ

There has to be some kind of balance. I know how scary out of control fires are. As a young girl in the early '60's, I believe either in 62 or 63 there were terrible fires intentionally set all over western Atlantic County. I remember we were all told to evacuate and just the men in the...

Southern pine beetles killing trees in NJ

I could be wrong, but there is something to this fire thing. It's a necessary part of the pines and alot of other areas. Keeps alot of things in check that would or are running wild. The encroachment of housing developments in or near sensitive areas has caused a lot of probably...

    Walk on the Beach

The blooming is winding down. This week there were plenty of Purple Asters on the sandy part of the beach as well as along the water. The Ladies Tresses are out in force. This past summer's walks have truely made me appreciate an area I've taken for granted. I left a little earlier for work...

    Downstown Steam Mill

While doing some research on some historical spots near home I found a notation about Aquilla Down(s) building and opperating a steam powered saw mill at Downstown (named for him). Does anybody have any information about the mill and where it was located. The article mentioned it being on the...

    Feral Dogs

a couple of summers ago we were chased by what appeared to be a momma dog and 5 or 6 near adult pups. we were heading to friendship bogs from the vicinity of eagle tavern in the truck and saw the dogs in the woods. didn't think much about it until they caught up to us at friendship. they were...

    Jersey Devil

I found the article quite funny! Down here in Atlantic County, there is actually a Route 666 (Cape May Ave). Runs from Dorothy to Head of the River. About 10 ago my daughter went to high school with a girl whose address was #13 Rte 666. Just a little bizzare. Maybe the route number...

    Stinkbugs!

apparently not just here...I was watching one of the network news channels yesterday aand they said the stinkers are horrible all over the north east. Something about not using those "wonderful" pesticides have allowed them to reach these proportions.
