This makes me wonder how much effort I want to keep putting into keeping it running.

Ben, I think NJGIN has been really fast and stable ever since they made some changes last year. I wouldn't give up on them yet, this was evidently just a little glitch. They are getting ready to make a bunch of service changes again on August 23, so maybe this is related? As I read it, the changes should have no effect on the maps we use though. https://njgin.state.nj.us/oit/gis/NJ_NJGINExplorer/docs/NJOGIS_Service_Deprecation_notice.pdf

What is FML? I recently spent a little time starting to put together my own USGS topo for the Northeast US, but it's a huge project and I got discouraged. If you just want New Jersey, NJGIN has that. We discussed this a few years ago, and IIRC your objections were that NJGIN's servers were slow and they don't switch to the 100k topo when you zoom out.

I think NJGIN servers work very well now. And there should be a way to combine their 100k and 24k WMS layers to accomplish what you want. In Leaflet it's very simple to create a layer group and configure the zoom levels for each map. Isn't this possible in the Google API? If not, then this open source package should be able to do it: https://mapproxy.org

If all else fails, I can put a tileset together for South Jersey that you can host locally at NJPB.

I'm not much of a fan of the arcGIS topo, there are a lot of JPEG artifacts and it isn't even a "real" USGS topo, it's the old National Geographic version with hillshading that muddies things up and adds nothing in flat areas like the pines. The NJGIN version is a little odd because they converted the maps to a 12-color palette in an attempt to standardize the colors. I don't think they're too bad though, you can compare here

NJGIN: https://online.boydsmaps.com/#15/39.8187/-74.5357/njgin24k
arcGIS: https://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.81865&lng=-74.53568000000001&z=15&type=topo&gpx=

My own version is much cleaner however :D https://online.boydsmaps.com/#15/39.8187/-74.5357/pines1999

Mine also goes up to level 16 while both NJGIN and arcGIS are only level 15. But it's probably a bigger tileset than you would want to host at NJPB. I could give you a level 15 version however, that would be around 1GB for South Jersey.

I don't know why I didn't notice this until just now, when wks commented on the thread.

The extra level is nice to have but I occasionally use the topo map for things outside of NJ, which the NJGIN and Boydsmaps versions wouldn't cover (as far as I know.)

NJGIN is doing maintenance on their servers all day today. This may affect all the aerials (except Google) in NJPB Maps - right now they are loading very slowly. You will have the same problem accessing this imagery at boydsmaps too. Here's the announcement from NJGIN:

Due to scheduled maintenance, the NJOGIS map services & applications may experience reduced capacity on, Monday March 6, 2023, between 5AM and 5PM. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Just to be clear, all of these maps except "Topo" will be affected by this:

FYI, another outage is coming on Monday at noon for an hour, but then there will be a major outage all day Tuesday. It should affect the same maps again, both in NJPB Maps and boydsmaps.com.

Due to scheduled maintenance, NJOGIS map services & applications may be unavailable on Monday, March 20, 2023 from noon to 1pm and Tuesday, March 21, 2023 from 5am to 5pm. We apologize for any inconvenience.

FYI: all of the NJGIN maps have been offline this morning, as I posted elsewhere. This includes almost everying on the NJPB maps menu, the only things currently working are Google Maps, the Topo (from ArcGIS) and my old LIDAR map (locally hosted at NJPB). Same maps are also down at boydsmaps. There was no scheduled outage, so I guess we just have to wait. It's been down since at least 6:00 AM today.

Are you sure it's not just cached data? If you use NJPB maps a lot, then you might have quite a bit in the browser cache. Try looking at a different map that you haven't used, in another part of the state.

Regardless, not working for me either at NJPB or boydsmaps. And I have tried with both Verizon FIOS and AT&T cellular on my phone. Just checked again right now at NJPB maps and nothing loads from NJGIN

I just randomly picked a place in Omaha Nebraska and my maps are working. I have no cache there.
