a village...in the pines
Plant enthusiasts.....
Not being very familiar with orchids, is there a way to determine by just looking at a leaf - the variety of orchid in the absence of a flower? Are these photos orchid leaves? Any help will be dutifully retained for future reference. Thanks in advance! Also....the last photo....small headed beak rush?

Turtle, those leaves look like Golden Club (Orontium aquaticum), or some other aquatic plant. And I think you are right about the Rhynchospora--but it's always best to look at the achene on those.

Thanks Bob. Add to my list of desire for newly accquired knowledge....shore birds, mushrooms, and aquatic plants....etc.
While I'm here I want to mention that oji's plant #2 looks like Coppery St. John's wort.....Hypericum denticulatum

Why are some golden-yellow and others are pale-yellow?

Interesting!

If I get a free minute this weekend Jess and I will check to see if the ones we visited are there.

This last set was the ones you told me about on the Big hike in May. I stopped in Chatsworth to see the White Fringed and then went to check these out. There are whites growing there also so a hybrid is possible.

Wow, they are having a great year, and they are so early! What is going on with this climate?

My daughters and I went again to check on the orchids that we could not find last week. After looking the complete area over we found one plant flowering. It is much drier there this year and it appears this one is just starting to bloom. I suspect this may be the only one since this is at the lowest point which had a slight amount of moisture. All the others would be on completely dry ground.

Did Gleason and Cronquist invent their own language?

I have wondered the same thing. They often come up with a word that is found in no other technical manuals. However, that piece of work is so monumental and daunting, there is no way they could have done that work by themselves. There must have been hundreds of Botanists and Educators contributing.

Monday evening Bob and I looked for the yellow "fringeless" orchid which is much more rare that the orchids we have been finding. We were successful, and Bob counted 47 of them in one bog. Sorry about the quality...I was not happy with any of my photo's from last night.

We also found the Pine Barren Death Camas that we discovered on a trip three years ago, but unfortunately it appears we are late. It was this same week three years ago that it was just starting to bloom.

Guy, Nice Platanthera integra, it looks like the sun was starting to set when you took the picture. I"ll try taking a couple pictures with the flash if there isn't enough sunlight.
