Wanted to say hello and post up a thread. I moved to NJ a couple years back from NY and finally got to visit the pinelands. I have to say I'm hooked on being out there and enjoying a day of exploring.

I have read a couple threads here and it seems you would all frown on my type (4x4 owner) but I want to add more then take away. I was sad to see litter on my first visit to the pinelands a couple weeks back and took some out where we stopped.

I joined the site to see if I could pitch in to keep the PBs nice for my kids and their kids.

Thank you for having a great site.

Thank you very much! I'm a treadlightly kind of driver. I'm joining treadlightly and blue ribbon coalation.

I mountain bike (trail riding just to get out and explore) and love photography. So I really want to get out and have some fun.

My goals for my truck are more rescue/expedition rig.

I love the the PBs are an hour from me. I grew up in brooklyn a couple blocks from prospect park. I spent most of my childhood there just goofing off with my dog on my bike. Can't wait to see more of what NJ has to offer.

Welcome,
If you are sincere, I do not think anyone here will be a critic because you do a little responsible off roading. It's part of the Pines Package if you want to get around a bit and really see all the wonder. Many nice folks here so read, learn, and share.

You will find there are a couple annual opportunities with good groups in more than one Pine Barrens region to lend a real hand and help keep it clean. Keep an eye out.

Welcome! As far as 4x4's go, I wouldn't leave home without it. It's not the vehicle that's the problem, but the person driving it :D

Welcome to the forum Stanbo! And don't be apologetic about owning a vehicle that lets you enjoy the forest - that's what God put it there for! Of course there are some who want to put gates up at every trailhead and make hikers subsist on teaberries and sassafrass bark, but after all there's one in every crowd and it's our job to show them it just ain't so!

Are you allowed to collect teaberry (wintergreen) and sassafrass? There might be a NJ statute covering that one ! LOL !!! Or a permit !!!

Hi Stan,
If you enjoy the pines and are looking to volunteer you will find plenty of opportunity to do so through this site. Lots of advance postings for get-togethers, clean-ups and trail work. We manage to wander the pines in various manners (foot-wheels-fins-etc.) Welcome and enjoy your time here. I have found the "residents" to be warmly accomodating!

I try to be responsible. I am just learning now. I would rather stick to legal roads and just have a good time. No need to end up in the wrong spot causing trouble. I have responsibilities and don’t want to deal with the hassle of trespassing.

I really do just like cruising thru though. It is fun.

I should have a trailer hitch soon and wouldn’t mind towing a cart around to pile some garbage in there. It is a shame seeing used tires an building materials dumped in the woods.

There is a little local wooded area near my house and some people do the same there, tires and construction debre.

That is good to know. I read a few threads here and there was a lot of negatives when it came to 4x4s. I think of my truck as both a toy and a means to an end. The end being some cool landmarks or off the way spots.

welcomew I see youre making it to all the sites. try this one as well www.njjeep.org
:)

Yes I am! Trying to both learn and help out where I can. I joined on njjeep.org a while back. I post here and there but I mostly lurk subscribing to interesting threads.

I can see that. Right now I plan on dealing with the truck’s maintenance. I want to stop any and all leaks. I really don’t want to leave any trace that I was around.

LOL good point. I can’t wait to enjoy the forest in the winter. I work outside so it is fun for me to play outside.

Yeah I did a solo run this Saturday and just mosied along. I stopped wherever I saw a sign and got out and read them. I have coworkers that swear the whole pineland is off limits to vehicles. I have friends that took me there and I don’t see them being the type of people that will go where they aren’t supposed to.

I was happy to see a posting with vehicle rules so I pretty much followed them. Anywhere that I saw a warning for private property I stayed away.

Plus the roads I was on are taggen on my tomtom which I thought was funny. I want to start marking spots with waypoints so I can know where things get “hairy”.

I love the “NJ attitude”, I grew up in NY and everyone is way nicer out here. It fits my style way better.

I like getting a wave or a smile when I pull over so people can pass on the trails.

I will also get on my bike soon as I figure a trail I can run without going thru deep water.

Here are some pictures from Saturday:

Thank you! It is my first 4x4 and I love it. I wanted a wrangler but with a family and tight finances this was the better choice. I want to lift it and equip it as a trail/recover/discovery vehicle :D

Welcome to the forum, StanBo. That's a good truck for most pineland trails.
I hope you're not running around out there without a spare... that's a little risky!

I have the oem donut inside the truck. I just got that rear bumper with tire carrier. I plan to run a set of 32s mounted on 15x10s. I need a lift before that so right now I just use what came with the truck (31s).

Nice swing away bumper on the XJ! 4x4 owner here as well.... I volunteer every year at the Pine Barrens clean up that is sometime in late October early Nov. It starts at the Ranger Station on 206 at Atsion. Usually gets quite a few Jeeps of all makes and models plus some others.

We routinely pull out about 8 30 yard dumpsters full of trash as well as piles of tires, stolen cars, boats etc.... sad really that every year we ALWAYS have large amounts to pick up.

I will keep my eyes open for the cleanups. I work a lot but if I make the time to play I can make some to clean up.

We deal with illegal dumping a lot at work. We have some stations on out of the way roads so we have dumpersters full discarded. We are constantly on the phone with 311 to report garbage.

I think no matter how well we clean there will always be more to get rid of. There is always something there on the roads at work. Hey just keep up with it.

I can't wait to snag a good camera or photoshop some saturation on my shots. Some of the stuff here is phenominal.

Welcome aboard Stan. I am confident you will find piles of information here to aid you in your adventures. As for 4x4's, I suspect most people on this site have them. They are pretty much required (pretty much) for most Pine barren exploring. I think the issue that comes up often concerns people who abuse wetlands areas and/or tear up the roads, ride over plant communities, etc.

There are Plenty of 4x4 challanges on the legal roads.

From your pic, I see you were riding out by the old Buckingham area, along the tracks. That is a very cool area, that bog, with it's dead cedars always seemed meloncholy to me. There are some very interesting bogs further west and a little south from that road.

BTW: Please do yourself a very big favor. Get your self some chain and a winch (come-along) don't get a chinese made come-along though. Trust me!! I've ripped two or three of them apart out there. I use an old USA made 3 ton engine hoist that is as reliable as death and taxes are inevitable.
