Oh, I missed that. Is it the old Friendship post office? There's a big flag in front. You saw my photo of Friendship, right?

    john mcphees, the pine barrens

Just got it. The photos in the back aren't as great as I remembered them, the only ones of particular interest being on the last two pages showing Fred Brown and his house. Otherwise any number of PB photos on here are way better. I don't really need it, so if anyone wants it I'll send it you...

    john mcphees, the pine barrens

Time passes. The Pine Barrens came out in 1968, and the events that took place in it must have occurred a few years earlier, half a century ago. I just found a copy of McPhee's book on Ebay. I think it is the one we were talking about on here two and a half years ago, the one with photos...

    Windows 8 question....

Anyway I'm same as you, undecided what to choose in new computer, leaning towards the 7. Seems to me 8 is meant for tablets.

Man Goes Missing During Hunting Trip

Do cell phones work in there? They didn't used to. If it wasn't for my old Garmin 2 GPS (no map) - and the battery was almost dead! - I would have never found that rental car that got bogged down in the sand in one of the most remote parts of the Barrens, oh about 13 or 14 years ago I guess...

    Windows 8 question....

46er, it's not just leftovers that come with W7, it's the most expensive business class laptops, like this Lenovo W530: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/builder.workflow:Enter?sb=%3A00000025%3A00003717%3A&smid=F2A3EC7C45634AE8AB0F26CCAC867854&redir=y I...

    Windows 8 question....

7 or 8 for new computer, I was wondering about that too. If 8 is so great why are they still selling the top of the line laptops with 7?

Dear Pine Barrens: Cloud People exist.

Yeah. Rt. 72 cuts right through The Plains (the dwarf forest). But I was there last year and it's not quite as awesome as it once was as the trees are taller now. It's still awesome, but it's no longer as if you were Paul Bunyan towering over an entire forest. I think that's due to fire...

Dear Pine Barrens: Cloud People exist.

What picture, Glenn? My atavar? That was me in the NJPB Plains, taken long ago. The trees in the Plains were shorter back then and I towered over the entire forest like Paul Bunyan. I posted more old photos of the Barrens, on the photo board, i think.

Picture of a giant bird seen in the pines

Woodjin - Probably because the ground is uneven so you don't see the shadow.

Picture of a giant bird seen in the pines

Mark - I remember passing under a tree in central Jersey with one of those critters right above me, and yep enormous, and I didn't like the way it was looking at me. Speaking of birds, I wonder I that tree with all the hummingbirds on it is still in Batsto. More hummingbirds in one place -...

    Film dead?

I'm talking about the 1950's. Tri-X was introduced in the 1940's but first appeared in 35mm in 1954. "Back in 1954, when Tri-X debuted with an ASA 200 rating..." http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/18062784
