    warm weather

Yep, that was Challenge. It's short but I LOVE it. On a non-crowded day, I can do that run over and over and over until I collapse from exhaustion. The 30 below conditions, I remember having a day like at Mt Snow a few years ago that made me go out and spend a lot of $$ on a really...

    warm weather

*sigh* I miss skiing. I used to go to Blue Mt. every weekend that I didn't go to Killington. Until I messed up my knee a couple of years ago. I love that big open run at Blue with the high speed quad chair at the bottom. I would try and go all the way to the bottom without braking at all, skis...

    cacoon

I wonder if they have a preference for hardwood trees, and that's why you don't see a whole lot of affected trees? There just aren't that many hardwood trees in the pines. When I was a kid, the 17 year cicadas hit my hometown. They were EVERYWHERE. Every tree was covered with the casts. The...

    cacoon

It's hard to see from this angle, but they appear to be the skin casts from cicadas. The nymphs emerge from the ground and climb up on the trunk of trees, then they split open and a winged adult emerges. The skin cast/shell is left behind.

    Chicken in the pines

People can be pretty crappy. Anyone been to Sandy Ridge lately? Looks like someone backed up a truck to one of the cellar pits and totally filled it with old appliances and other assorted household garbage. We usually take several trash bags out with us, too. It never ends though. Last summer...

    Chicken in the pines

I find deer gut piles aaaaaall the time. I don't really think a whole lot of it since they are likely to be consumed quickly by animals and/or bacteria. It's the beer cans everywhere that really bug me.

    Pine Barrens Ecology?

Thank you, Bob! OCC is sort of a hike for me, (I live in Ewing), but I'll see what I can do. The class sounds perfect.

    Pine Barrens Ecology?

Happy New Year, Piney Folks! Has anyone here taken or heard of a biology/ecology course offered at a community or regular college (or anywhere else, for that matter) that focuses on the Pine Barrens? I would love to take such a course, but can't seem to find one. Often, schools don't...

Yeah, it's a short, easy walk from the road, maybe 500 feet at the most. It's worth it. :)

Please send me a case to NJ

I had some beer from Newfoundland (called "Fin du Monde") the other day and it totally kicked my butt. It's 9% alcohol. Whoohoo! I know Newfoundland is not Greenland, and it has nothing to do with anything, I just thought it was important that you know this. :)

    First Aid Kits

Duct tape. What a GREAT idea. That's going in the Jeep. This is why I read this forum. Such a big bunch of smarties. :) We have a first aid kit with the standard first aid kit things, plus lots of OTC drugs and a long hemostat. We pick that thing up a lot, it's a handy tool, first aid or not.

    Litter in the pines!

Well, I now have an idea of where at least some of the garbage comes from. We went paddling on the Wading river yesterday (WOW, what a day), and apparently, a lot of other people had the same idea. The canoe rental places were doing a landoffice business, it seems. Dumped canoes all up and down...

    Litter in the pines!

We always bring big trash bags with us. It looked like a McDonald's exploded last time we were at the Friendship ruins. This may be a naive question, but who the &%#! are these people who do that? What are they thinking when they throw their beer cans on the ground? That the park service will...
