    900 homes to be built

Guy, I know of two threatened species which I've seen there. I've submitted forms to the state on my sightings. This is a old case resurfacing now with the excuse that it will be good for the economy. There are many groups against this, hopefully it doesn't go through this time.

    900 homes to be built

http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/182/story/393529.html If this goes through I'll be pretty devasted. I've spent years out at this place and there are so many rare creatures out there. I have a knot in my stomach thinking about this place getting developed.

Pinelands Commission approves expenditure to preserve 600 acres

Love hearing about more and more property being bought up. I was hoping when I read the title that it was going to be property purchased around Jackson road in Evesham/Medford.....I wish they would preserve that woods before the next development boom.

    High Plains Drifting

Thanks Chrisr. Really with snakes there is nothing to fear. Most are very harmless and need to be provoked in order to bite. Don't worry about rattlesnakes, they are very elusive, very secretive and aren't found in areas of open woods. You have to be seeking them out to find them....and...

    High Plains Drifting

Yeah Al, I spent about 4-5 years hiking cumberland county alone and would love to see something like that. I feel like I'm driving up Oswego Road toward the gun club off Allen's road when I see that. Looks just like the pine barrens proper. Can someone drop a cigarette in the cumberland...

    High Plains Drifting

Chrisr, it seems at the turn of the century much of south jersey had rattlesnakes. Obvioulsy given there reputation(not really deserved) they were killed anytime they were seen, which extirpated them from many areas. I know the area you speak of had them up till fairly recently and I'm sure...

    High Plains Drifting

Al, one of my favorites is the one by Jake's Landing. I need to explore the one by buckshutem.....did that auto park compromise the buckshutem one at all? I've read very old accounts mid 1600's of buzztails being rounded up and killed in the buckshutem cedar swamp.....wonder if there still there?

    High Plains Drifting

Lots of good info there Al, thanks. That area(cumberland, cape) is definetely loaded with wildlife, more so then the pines to the north. But I always find myself wondering what the area use to look like. Whether it was more piney at one point, the lack of good cedar swamps down there...

    fishing in the pine barrens

Wow something exploited in the pet market, who would have thought. Jeff, is it protected because of it being a popular aquarium fish?

    fishing in the pine barrens

If it is on the endangered list it would be illegal to touch let alone catch. Even catching to release is considered possession and can bring up to a 10,000 dollar fine. I would check the legalities first.

    Cool, Dead Stuff

Scott, the turtle actually is a non native turtle. Its either a red eared slider or some sort of cooter. It isn't our native northern redbelly though. This probably explains both it being out of place and dead. Scott, how big was the snake skeleton? Could you estimate a width? Was the log...
