    Taunton Mansion

yep, me - still wonder'n (aloud) Thks, I just find it very interesting that there was such actvitiy and economic interests in this area.. say 140 years ago, and little record of exactly what and when. I'm guessing extensive bogs in the 1860-1900.. then nothing for years -- until development...

    Taunton Mansion

Thks Oriental & TeeGate: Great stories, that covers my questions from all angles - I grew up near Rt70 & 73 and remember dairy farms, peach and apple orchards. Taunton felt as remote and rustic as a far away outpost in the wilds to me as a boy. I always loved that sense of solitude and smell...

    Taunton Mansion

I drive past this place all the time and wonder who owns it and if it's protected (it certainly looks unique and of historical value). Does anyone live there who can comment on it's condition inside? It looks like small apartments or rooms - always many cars outside. Got a great view of the...

    Whats this?

Has anyone seen this, I would think its a cesspool pipe or vent if where near anything -- but this was pretty remote. Somewhere around here: http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=39.71699,-74.71149&z

    Ruins on Home Bog

buildings Yes, the one building looked to about 25' by 20' -- so maybe storage or a pump house / maint. shack (esp. given its location). I was wondering if the building remains could help date the bog operation - my theory is that they have not been used for 100+ years given the trees...

    Ruins on Home Bog

car pics Only one car, here is another pic. Any value in getting the VIN and reporting it? I wonder what the procedure Rangers use when they find abandoned vehicles.

    Ruins on Home Bog

good call You know you cars, I thought Mustang too -- did not linger long enough to confirm. All the wires and oil filter looked brand new, but that does not compute since given where the car was... there is absolutely no way it got there in the recent past. What year do you think?

    Ruins on Home Bog

Went out to find evidence of the 3 buildings indicated on an old map of Jobstown Bogs. Only found signs of 1 building and some strange Catus-like plants. Also found a car in the middle of nowhere, must have been dropped from a plane because there is no way it could have been driven to...

    Old Bog Jeep'n

Exploring Bogs Thanks Guy, You remain the only person ever to be able to provide any useful and intersting information about this area. Those maps are great & news to me regarding how that complex was split (at least named differently). The area you point to is a few hundred yards...

    Old Bog Jeep'n

Prop ownership Good question and important point (ownership) I should have included the little I know about it. The land, is "313 Preservation" which I think is township owned land -- It is indeed posted, so I have trespassed to the extent I've gone beyond my property line. Dog walkers...

    Old Bog Jeep'n

Bogs ID TeeGate See here: http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/showthread.php?t=2171 I think it was you that at least pointed me to 2 old maps (1860s?) that had these Bogs ID'd as "Jobstown Bogs". I'm still interested in learning more about the history (when were they active, who owned...

    Old Bog Jeep'n

There is a nice, almost pristene section of the Old Jobstown Bogs near my place (as ID'd by Tee Gate a while back). This particular section is nearly dry within one of the old bogs and has many mature cedars (some about 60" in circ.). I always thought of this area as a hike-to spot, never...

Trying to Find FRM (Forked River Mountain)

Frm FRM .. I did not realize it was private land, was it bought by a preservation group? I would not suggest you go on private land. The couple of times I've been there on my bike, I take a dirt road off of Rt 539 (about 3 miles north of Rt 72) -- its about 5 or 6 miles in (bare left at...

Converting a Bog to a "lake"

bogs and lakes I don't know if there is any advantage environmentally, does a lake support more life or types of life than a dry (or wet) bog? Since I don't think bogs or lakes are natural to the Pines, which feature is more desirable? Seems there was some type of move afoot to create...

Converting a Bog to a "lake"

Looking at the satellite photos, it may be possible to create more lakes in Marlton, Medford, Shamong and other areas with all the old bogs around. Not that it would be economically feasible, potilically possible ....but maybe a good idea environmentally(or maybe not ?) ... but what's involved...

    Turtle ID

Came upon this guy out in the open, about 50' from the nearest water. Seemed to be digging with rear legs, could it have been a female getting ready to lay eggs? (if so, risky spot) Big, about 12-14" long. Anybody know what kind of turtle and approximate age? thks.
