    Who/what would you be?

OK, this is a little goofy but I was just wondering. If you where alive 100 or 200 years ago and lived in the Pine Barrens, what do you think your occupation might have been. To help you out, here is a neat site that lists occupations of days gone by...

Red Oak Grove (and Union Clay Graves)

Ken, I'd be up for it. I like history in general. My wife, who is researching here geneology, bought a book on the history of Camden County. One of these days I'll let her read it. Steve

    chatsworth woods

KenDawg and I did a little exploring back there a couple of months ago. There is not really much to see back there except the required junked car and one rather large deep hole near it. We couldn't tell if the hole was natural or not. Steve

Red Oak Grove (and Union Clay Graves)

I agree. Like Rodney King once said, "Can't we all just get along." (I think that was the only thing he ever said)

    Buzby's then and now

Yep, I think those three guys were sitting there the first time I stopped in there probably in '72 or '73. I never noticed though that 'General' was abbreviated to "Gen'l"

I agree with that 100%. I enjoy a challenge and consider this a quest.

GMRS / FRS Radios and their range

Ben. Just like our cell phones, we were getting excellent reception on top of FRM. Thats not always the case though. On one trip out KenDawg and I were only about 1 mile apart and we could not reach each other with our radios. I have a seven mile range and Ken's is five miles. It happens...

Red Oak Grove (and Union Clay Graves)

It does seem that a lot of people go out of there way to dump their trash in the woods. There are some real low lifes out there. Those refridgerators actually could have ran on propane believe it or not. Steve

Red Oak Grove (and Union Clay Graves)

We must have just missed you. After our trip to Aserdaten & FRM I stopped at that very same cellar hole to show KenDawg. I had found that site about 2 weeks ago while exploring the area. Did you notice that small grassy patch just beyond the well? I think it may have been a garden or...

    Planting trees

Check out this link to Topozone for a map. The red X marks the spot to turn off of Allen Rd. http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4386732&e=547527&s=25&size=l

Red Oak Grove (and Union Clay Graves)

red oak grove Al, What did you find at Red Oak Grove? The site toward the clay mines is Union Clay Works. There is not much there, a couple of cellar holes, some bricks and terra cotta pieces. Oh, and a refrigerator grave yard. Funny how all the refrigerators go to the same place to die...

    Ellis Adams and Calico

Barry, I guess the reflection of the trees and brush makes it hard to see the water but it's there. This was on Calico-Warren Grove Rd, not Oswego Rd. I've seen the ruins on Oswego Rd and I think they are the same ruins shown as beeing Calico in the gallery. The foundations do not seem to be...

All filled with water and very rutted. We walked through and kept slipping into the ruts.

trip report for 8-2 and 8-3-03

Al, I think so. I was there today. The 1885 topo map that can be found in the 'Map Archives' shows it there. On the right side of the road past the puddle I saw the cellar holes and corrigated metal and lots of brick. On the left side of the road, which the map actually shows as Calico...

    Ellis Adams and Calico

Make sure you bring water shoes to walk through the puddle like we did today. The puddle: We walked about a mile until we came upon this nice little area: We walk about another mile past that to the left of the gate until we decided to turn around. While we were walking a...

Escapee loose in the Pine Barrens

When I first heard the news they said he was found on an island. On the late news they said he was found at an abandoned campground. So, was it an abandoned campground on an island or was it perhaps Ace Campgrounds? That's a pretty scary thought seeing how some members here have visited there...
