    what Sue means by "genetic bottleneck" is that a population passes through a restricted "bottleneck" in size - this can be caused by chance events, etc. In this case there would not be enough genetic variability for the population to thrive sustainably.

    Was out in the burlington co. area somewhere off of rt563 friday, and boy was i chased out of there! I never had such a bad experience with those flies in my life! I felt like i was in a movie, running back to my car for safety, looking back watching a swarm of these demon-flies come after me...

    No, it is not a brown snake. It is a 100% pure Eastern Worm Snake. They are fairly common throughout the pine barrens but spend most of their lives underground burrowing.. especially in the hotter months of the year. That's why most people don't see them unless you look for them. Cool find.
