wow ! that is amazing. So south jersey is home to a new species of animal. if a new plant is discovered it is something to get ecited about so this seems momumental. i am not sure if it is exclusive to south jersey from the article. I wonder if it will be protected if they determine it is...

A reason to go in the pines? Isn't the pines alone reason enough?:) As for the Shrine...you are correct Bob, the Webbs mills branch. the pond with the bleached out gravel. I must have stopped there 30 times before I walked around to that one side noticed it. Good call. Jeff

    Harrisville-Martha Area

Jokerman is right. Having some of these books really enhance the experience. When I show these areas to friends and family I often take along a book (usually Beck) and read the chapters to them relating to the area just before we arrive there. Jeff

    Hanover Farms/Upton versus Amatol

Wow! What an amazing find and a very rare thing to see on ebay! The Pittman family is still living there. William or Bill Pittman is the elder. He is an avid pickerel fisherman though I have not met him. We know people in common. Jeff

    Hanover Farms/Upton versus Amatol

I didn't know that either. Interesting. Not to get side tracked but, speaking of Upton Station, they are building what appears to be a large house across route 70 from upton Station. Where those vernal ponds are. I knew that land was private but I never saw a for sale sign go up. About a...

    Harrisville-Martha Area

Boyd gave you the exact location a couple of posts back. It is along the road side and fenced off. It is not as closely guarded as some other spots because it is mentioned in so many books and where it's location is. Good luck. Jeff

rattler, coal, orchid, crane, great blue herons..oh my!

Welcome aboard!! Speaking of pet/dog graves.... I found a very elaborate "shrine" to a dog in greenwood WMA in a very out of the way spot. Did anybody else ever find that? I won't give away the location though I doubt anybody is boring enough to specifically go looking for it. :) In the...

    Waterfalls

I used to fish behind the old grist mill for trout. I grew up a couple towns over. Not much of a waterfall. The town is not rural by pine barrens standards. Jeff

An interesting article on Eastern coyotes

http://www.wvdnr.gov/hunting/CoyoteResearch.shtm There is an area in the woods were I found a number of mutilated fawns and what I believe to be coyote dens and tracks. I want to investigate further. A recent trip there showed little evidence. Perhaps the pack has moved on.

    Piebald again

It has been a while since I have seen the piebald heard I know of near my house. I figured they were wiped out or something since I used to see them all the time and then nothing. Well, today I briefly took the motorcycle out and sure enough there they were again:) I got real close to this...

Difference between a cellar hole and a furnace?

Welcome aboard! Yes, those were celler holes at Friendship. A furnance looks like a huge chimney. There are not many still standing. The furnance at Weymouth is probably the best preserved furnance I can think of! Jeff

    Pine Plains Sun

Great report Bob! I always wanted to follow the feeder stream to the pond there. That pond is one of the most unique bodies of water in the PB. I picture clear cold water running over bleached beacon hill gravel. Yeah, riding the motorcycle down the runway was both frightening and...
