No more fun in the Pines

Is it just me ... … or do the rangers force other people off the road to get by. Today I was going north between Hawkins Bridge and Friendship and Mr. Ranger was going south. We stopped about one hundred feet from each other. I took a quick look around and there wasn’t a place to back...

    Abandoned Bogs

It looks like it’s private land used for hunting by it’s members. Here’s more info on NJSA 23:3-29: www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/semi-wild_info.pdf I was at a Medford Township Council meeting the other night and the Pinelands Commission had a presentation of their plan for a...

    Roads to Nowhere

I’ve been on many a hike with OCSJ and have never seen people drop litter and such, especially that quantity of stuff. Most of the people are regulars that care about the pines and wouldn’t let newbies trash-up the place.

    Searching for Jemima Mount.

A few Sunday’s ago there was someone shooting in back of Batona Camp Site. It sounded like they were target practicing, too many shots for a deer. So now I wear an orange hat on Sunday’s just in case. Sorry about being off-topic.

    Roads to Nowhere

Tuckerton Road (now Iron Pipe Road) ends at County Route 563 below Chatsworth. You can follow a portion of it near Bodine's tavern site as it disappears into the woods.

    Paintball: good, bad, or ugly?

I say ugly. Paint balls and the paint are supposed to be biodegradable. I’ve seen paint ball remains in the pines and have gone back a year or so later and they were gone. Paper is biodegradable too but I don’t go around throwing it out the window of my truck because it will be gone in a few...

Here’s a neat photo of a portable sawmill: http://kentuckyexplorer.com/nonmembers/00-05033.html It looks like a beehive of activity.

    Sawmills

I was looking on the web for a photograph of a portable steam saw mill and found an advertisement for Blandy’s Portable Steam Engine and Saw Mills. http://memory.loc.gov/service/pnp/cph/3b50000/3b52000/3b52700/3b52709r.jpg Web page link (look half way down the page)...

    Sawmills

If the foundation is about 10’ from the tracks, has four bolts and may have a hole or a notch for a cable, it may be a foundation for a railroad signal. The ones I’ve seen in the pines are tapered, smaller on top and bigger at ground level. Here’s a picture I found on the net. Sorry for...

Father Accidentally Shoots Son In Leg

As a rule of thumb I stay out of the woods on Saturdays. I was on a road in back of the Batona Camp site a couple of Sundays ago and there was an idiot shooting in the woods. It sounded like the person was target shooting. On the way out I saw a tent at the camp site. No vehicles around...

Father Accidentally Shoots Son In Leg

I think the hunters had a malfunctioning safety mechanism like keeping their finger off of the trigger. I know you can’t teach common sense but don’t they have hunter safety courses in PA. ?

    Atsion property info

They just installed a septic field in the back yard. It looks like someone buried an elephant. I knew the area was swampy but the high water table must be at ground level. You could go sledding on that hill  ! Roy

    Five townships marker

Thanks for the information. I saw some ribbon up the road from the stone but it was time to leave. That road sucked me in. It looked ok at the beginning. I thought of backing up but backing up a quarter mile or more wasn’t going to be fun or easy. Roy

    Five townships marker

Hello All, I’ve wanted to look for a marker placed at the intersection of five townships and also marks an angle point in the county line between Burlington and Ocean Counties. I had Thanksgiving Day morning free so I decided to go a field. Getting to the area was easy enough. I...

    Google Map Tip

On the subject of Google. I found this on the net the other day. In Google Earth you can open GPX and LOC files and view your waypoints, routes and tracks. Nothing fancy but it's another way to view your data and it's nice to have color aerials. Roy
